The 2024 AAA Festival was jam packed with all types of accordion music and accordionists. There truly was something for everyone. It was wonderful to note how much the children enjoyed the presentations. And, it was encouraging to hear their wonderful performances.

What I particularly enjoyed and am proud of is how friendly and respectful everyone was of participants varying abilities and specific interests. I was so happy to see that people were willing to share their expertise, experiences, and love of the accordion. The exhibit room gave accordionists the
opportunity to try out and learn about about the different brands of accordion, again, all in a collegial and non competitive environment. The luncheons and gala dinner were delightful and delicious! Hearing some of our favorite accordionists helped to enhance the experience.

Featured performers included Joseph Natoli, Nikolay Bine, Hanzhi Wang, and
Dallas Vietty

I strongly suggest that if you have never attended an AAA Accordion Festival or, perhaps, had not been to one in a few years, please consider joining us next year. I have attended AAA Festivals for many many years and always come away learning new things about the accordion and making new friends who love to share their accordion stories.

This year’s festival featured several concerts and dining experiences

• Friday’s Kickoff Luncheon with Nikolay Bine and Dallas Vietty
• Friday’s Pasta Night with Frank Busso Sr, Frank Busso Jr, Dee Langley, and others
• Friday’s Gala Concert featuring Hanzhi Wang and Joe Natoli
• Saturday’s Luncheon with Nikolay Bine and the Westmont Philharmonia Accordion Orchestra led by Joanna Darrow
• Saturday’s Awards Concert with trophy presentations and lots of music
• Saturday’s Cocktail Reception & Gala Banquet, featuring Don Gerundo, Trio Called Leonard (with Dallas Vietty on accordion), & the AAA Festival Orchestra conducted by Frank Busso Sr.
• Finally, Sunday’s farewell breakfast and open meeting will be a great opportunity to review this
year's festival and to discuss future AAA endeavors throughout Friday and Saturday, our Exhibit Room included Ernest Deffner Affiliates, JANPress Music, and Music Magic USA, and to learn more about
AAA’s rich history.

Our Friday workshops were led by Nikolay Bine and Dee Langley. On Saturday, Dallas Vietty and Joe Natoli presented workshops. For our new-to-the-accordion adult hobbyists we welcomed AAA’s Beginner Adult Band, led by the ever-friendly Joanna Darrow.
Interested in a jam session or open mic? Don Gerundo hosted a fun filled event. The Gala Concert featured the 2024 AAA Festival Orchestra led by Frank Busso, Sr. and the group, Trio Called Leanard with accordionist Dallas Vietty.

The AAA invites you all to become an AAA member for the first time or to renew your membership which will help you stay up to date on accordion events and helps to fund AAA events and projects. The AAA will announce the date and location of the 2025 AAA Festival in future USA news publications.

In the meantime, enjoy reading and listening to the Daily Reports of the 2024 AAA Festival activities, concerts, exhibits and workshops at: 2024AAA86th

Accordion Jazz Chords

Passing of Lou LeBrun 93 on July 16

by Rita Davidson Barnea, Editor USA Accordion News
Lou LeBrun
Lou LeBrunAccordionist Pamela Tom shares, “It is with heavy heart that I share this news of the departure of a dear accordion mentor and friend of mine, Lou LeBrun who I became friends with at the 2011 Las Vegas International Accordion Convention.

She was a wonderful entertainer and accomplished accordionist who studied with Anthony Galla-Rini, founder of the Accordionists & Teachers Guild, International (ATG). She loved performing at evening concerto with the LVAC where her rendition of “Accordion Boogie," inspired me to take Accordion lessons. She loved being a part of the lunch entertainment for the National Accordion Association and ATG Annual festivals.

We became close friends and communicated several times a week about accordions and life in general. She gifted me with arrangements that she had. She was computer literate (a skill which few nonagenarians had) and she knew how to transcribe music with Finale software. She was able to use Zoom during the Covid area to stay in touch with the accordion community. She entertained all types of audiences and also gave lectures on the accordion to the general public. She sang and danced with her accordion. She was a wonderful ambassador for the accordion and was named to the American Accordionists Hall of Fame by FAMSPA.

I collaborated with Lou in writing her biography for the "Accordion Stars Illustrated" magazine. Although this magazine is no longer in production, some back issues and reference books can be ordered via the online publisher. Lou made a difference in the world entertaining with her accordion and bringing music and smiles to her audience. If you would like a copy of her biography, please let me know. Email: accordionpam@gmail.com

Louise Faye LeBrun, 93, of Wilmington, formerly of Springfield Missouri, peacefully passed away Tuesday July 16, 2024. She was born in Los Angeles, California on September 26, 1930. Lou worked as a computer programmer for many years, particularly in an era where women did not work in that profession. But her love in life was playing her accordion. At 7 years old, her uncle purchased her first accordion and lessons. At 12 years old she joined an LA based USO troop that traveled on weekends to military bases and hospitals in California and adjoining states. She eventually worked for the Ferraro Accordion studios. In the late 40s, the era of the Women’s Clubs, she began playing in beautiful homes where meetings convened. It was during this time that Lou learned to tap dance as well.

After her retirement in 2021 she continued to entertain many audiences in multiple venues with her singing, dancing and playing the accordion. She was truly a shining star to all who knew her. A highlight of her career was appearing as a guest in 2018 on "The Mystery Hour" in Springfield Missouri.

In 2020 she was honored as an inductee into the American Accordion Hall of Fame of the Federation of American Musicians, Singers and Performing Artists (FAMSPA). She was featured as a cover page guest artist on the April 2021 special edition of "Accordion Stars Illustrated" magazine.

She is survived by her daughter Penny of Wilmington (Jerome), son Jeffrey of Ocala, Florida (Patti) and son Jeffrey of Columbus, Ohio. She is also survived by her many accordion friends from all over the country. A private family ceremony was held. Contributions may be made in Lou’s name to Innovative Accordion Music Productions. Contributions are tax deductible and used to bring quality accordion music to entertain, educate and inspire.

Felicien Brut Plays For Opening Ceremony of the 2024 Olympic Games

Brut.

Video 2: Félicien Brut plays Michel Legrand: Les parapluies de Cherbourg

Accordionist Félicien Brut performs the iconic title song from Oscarnominated “Les Parapluies de Cherbourg” (1966). The nostalgic ballad was composed by iconic French film and TV composer Michel Legrand. Félicien
Brut plays a 1994 arrangement of Les Parapluies scored by Russian composer Evgeni Dervenko in 1946.

Excerpts from his website: Félicien Brut, who today travels the world to make his accordion heard, both as a soloist with major orchestras and as a central element of many chamber music ensembles. Born in Auvergne in 1986, Félicien discovered the accordion and the world of musette dances at a very young age. When he chose to start learning music at the age of six, it was primarily to play this popular repertoire intrinsically linked to his instrument.

In 1997, he joined the CNIMA (Centre National et International de Musique et d’Accordéon), and learned from professors including Jacques Mornet, Nathalie Boucheix, Domi Emorine, Roman Jbanov, and Claude Sauvage. In 2007, Félicien won three important international accordion competitions: the Castelfidardo and Klingenthal competitions and World Accordion Trophy. He then chose to continue his training with Maryse Roux at the Pôle Supérieur de Bordeaux-Aquitaine. During all these years, in contact with his teachers and other musicians, Félicien discovered many repertoires and, in particular, classical music and chamber music.

In 2009, Félicien started teaching accordion in conservatories. He first occupied a position in Libourne before joining the Conservatoire Départemental de Châteauroux. In 2013, he personally met the one he had admired the most for years: Richard Galliano. In 2016 Galliano convinced Félicien to imagine a project mixing the two repertoires he loves so much: musette and classical music. He settled in Paris and collaborated with accomplished musicians of his generation such as guitarist Thibaut Garcia, trumpeter Lucienne Renaudin Vary, cellists Anne Gastinel and Christian-Pierre La Marca, pianist Thomas Enhco, violinist Jordan Victoria. Félicien released two albums with the Quatuor Hermès and Edouard Macarez, Le Pari des Bretelles in 2019 and NEUF in 2020, both of which were released on the Mirare label. He is the guest of renowned festivals including La Folle Journée de Nantes, the Gstaad Menuhin Festival, the Festival Radio France Montpellier Occitanie, the Easter Festival of Aix-en-Provence, the Festival Musiq’3 of Brussels, Les Flâneries Musicales de Reims, Un Violon sur le Sable.

In 2018, Félicien decided to go beyond the world of chamber music as a soloist in front of the orchestra. He is thus heard alongside the Bordeaux- Aquitaine National Orchestra, Garde Républicaine Symphony Orchestra, the Cannes National Orchestra, and the Tours Symphony Orchestra. From repertoire to creation: Félicien Brut’s concerts are always full of twists and turns, surprises and anecdotes, and this characteristic is due above all to the repertoire he plays. He is a musician who refuses stylistic boundaries and this can be heard. From masterpieces of romantic music to the popular accordion repertoire, from French song standards to works for concert accordion from the Russian or North European schools, Félicien likes to mix eras and styles, from transcriptions to arrangements.

He associates with a group of talented composers and arrangers including Fabien Waksman (Victoire de la Musique 2023), Thibault Perrine, Romain Dumas, Domi Emorine, Bruno Fontaine, Karol Beffa, Cyrille Lehn, David Venitucci. In the space of six years, Félicien has commissioned and premiered 17 new works and a multitude of arrangements, whether in chamber music (duets, quintets, sextet) or for accordion and symphony orchestra. Félicien became a producer on France Musique in September 2021. Since then, he has hosted a weekly radio show: “Brut d’accordéon”. Traveling the most beautiful stages of the world and being an ambassador of the accordion in the four corners of the globe, Félicien signed in 2022 an artist contract with the prestigious label Erato/Warner Classics. He released his first album with this legendary label in October 2022: “J’ai deux amours”. His next album, a duet with the wonderful guitarist Thibaut Garcia, is announced in 2024.

The ATG Festival, held from July 23-28 in Kansas City, Missouri, was a huge success, from start to finish, and a total delight! The focus of the entire festival was a joyous celebration of Joan Cochran Sommers’ 90th birthday. Attendees and performers came in from all over the world to celebrate this amazing woman who is truly loved by all!

Joan has been a tremendous supporter of the Accordionists and Teachers Guild, International (ATG) and the American Accordionists’ Association (AAA) for more than six decades. Her tireless hard work and generous contributions are immeasurable.

The AAA created a beautiful plaque for Joan, in honor of her 90th birthday, and the governing board members at the festival were delighted to have the opportunity to present this award to Joan during her special “red carpet” celebration. AAA President Frank Busso, Jr. expressed, for all of us, how much the AAA appreciates Joan’s dedication to and support of the AAA since the 1950s.

Through the decades of AAA events, Joan was an adjudicator, the festival orchestra conductor, a workshop leader, the conductor of many “massed band” performances, and always, always there with a smile and encouragement for all participants. Joan Sommers is truly a gift to the accordion world!

Cory Pesaturo Performs with Jason Mraz

by Rita Davidson Barnea, Editor USA Accordion News
Video: Jason Mraz & Cory Pesaturo

Cory Pesaturo continues to bring the accordion to the world in various venues and in instrumental groups of all types. In July, Cory performed with Jason Mraz.

Cory shared, “In a time when we have not one, but two major commercials attacking the accordion (Geico and Meineke), all on the backs of the “Weird Al” movie very unfortunately not giving a bump to accordion sales or popularity when you couldn't have created a better situation to do so.”

Cory Pesaturo is doing everything he can to put the accordion on stages with famous artists and change the never ending battle for the instruments validity. Earlier in July, Cory gave a tour of Providence, Rhode Island to Jason Mraz's band who was playing that night in Rhode Island's biggest theater.

Some of of Mraz's band have become friends and fans of Cory's from the LA music scene and others from the Israeli music scene. After the show, Cory ran back stage to play for the rest of the band and Jason himself who Instantly became a fan and said "You need to play with us next week in
Boston."The next Saturday night, Mraz not only had Cory perform on three of his hit songs including "Lucky", but as you'll see in the video, gave Cory a chance to play his own solo in front of 10,000 fans. It was an extremely rare chance for an accordionist to get a solo with a superstar artist, and Cory let him know after the show, just what the moment meant not for him, but for the Accordion World at large. "Many Stars I have met and played for and played with privately say that they have me on their show, but either their management or band stop it from actually happening. You actually came through with it." Jason soon posted a picture of Cory on his Instagram Walland personally thanked him.

Jason Thomas Mraz is an American singer-songwriter and guitarist. He is best known for his hit song "I'm Yours," which was released in 2008, and became a global success. Jason Mraz has won two Grammy Awards winning Best Male Pop Vocal Performance for "Make It Mine" in 2010, and Best Pop

In 2014, Miles joined the Fighting Jamesons and is featured on the recording of their second full-legnth album, "Every Day Above Ground". Touring all over the United States, he has appeared with the Jamesons at many Irish & Rock festivals; ranging from multiple appearances at both Shamrockfest at RFK Stadium in Washington and more/During his time with the Fighting Jamesons, they've shared the stage and opened for World Inferno Friendship Society, Lucero, Eileen Ivers, & the Dropkick Murphys!

When not playing with Fighting Jamesons- Miles does a variety of other types of performances: from private parties, Oktoberfest events, weddings, bar/bat mitzvahs, dinners & cocktail hours, funerals, suprises-at-the-door etc. Maybe it's playing a rowdy Irish-Rock festival or a cocktail-hour for a wedding reception-- Miles's accordion performance can adapt to any atmosphere. His repertoire draws from various styles and countries ranging from German, Irish, French. Scandinavian,Klezmer, & more! Previously a guitarist in rock groups, Miles made a musical transformation in late 2006 when switching his primary instrument from guitar to the accordion. Initially self-taught, he then later became an apprentice of accordionist Sid Sward and a member of VALOV (Accordion Lovers of Virginia). He then further cut his teeth with the instrument while street performing all over the state of Virginia-- particularly in Norfolk, Charlottesville, Williamsburg, & Alexandria while also picking up gigs at weddings, cafes, and parties.

Hoyle also performed & was the bandleader for Mosquito Cabaret from 2017 until 2023-- which was a folk/world music sextet that derived their signature sound from various European folk traditions. The cabaret performed heavily in the Hampton Roads area: bars, art events, museums-- as well as appearing at festivals such as the nor-FOLK Fest, the Hampton Block Party, Stockley Gardens Art Fest, & NEON Fest + also appearing at venues such as Elevation 27, Shaka's, The Bunker, & The
Norva-- and many other places. Mosquito Cabaret shared the stage with the Atom Age, Maid of Ace, Agents of Good Roots, the Toasters, Agent Orange, & Bella's Bartok. You can hear Miles's accordion playing in this project on their debut album, "The Modern Life of Insects" & 4 single tracks that followed.Previously, Miles has done special guest-performances with Carbon Leaf & the Hackensaw Boys. He also has been a guest-performer with the Lazy Dangers, and guest-recorded for their original song, "One More Night" on their Lost Dogs EP as well as performing as a guest-organist on the Spirit Gun single, "Restless".

When COVID-19 hit, as a result of all concerts and major public gatherings having to be cancelled due to COVID-19-- Miles remained active by providing an Accordion-At-Your-Door service in the Hampton Roads area (and sometimes further!) that was both safe and COVID-19 compliant by doing small private performances for an affordable fee and showing up as a surprise to play for people at their door for whatever the occasion (birthdays, anniversaries, etc.).

Miles is performing regularly both solo & with the Fighting Jamesons, who are working on writing and recording their third full-length album. With solo performances sprinkled in between gigs with both groups-- Miles is also currently consistently in the process of writing, recording, and releasing new music. He has performed as a special guest on organ & assisted as a producer for the arrangement of the latest Spirit Gun single called, "Restless”. Most recently, Miles teamed up with audio engineer Rob Ulsh at Master Sound Recording Studios & guest violinist Justin Stanley, as well as cellist Joshua Sierra-Delgado for his debut solo recordings-- two singles entitled, "Of Cities Dreamt" & "Absolutely Charming" now available to hear on all major streaming platforms!

Last of Five Intermediate Level Concert Works Commissioned by the AAA Discussed and Performed at the 2024 Schimmel Accordion Seminars

by Dr. Robert Young McMahan Chair, AAA Composers Commissioning Committee
For those dedicated accordion students who have through hard work and determination reached the all-important milestone of performing compositions rated at the “intermediate” level of difficulty and are interested in adding timely contemporary classical works composed for our instrument to their repertoire, I would like to direct attention to five such mid-level solos that Elsie Bennett commissioned during the 1960s to accommodate that group:
“Embryo Suite”, by Paul Creston,
“Introduction and Dance”, by David Diamond,
“Lilt”, by William Grant Still,
“Prelude to the Sea”, by Carlos Surinach,
and
“Danza Ritual”, by Jóse Serebrier.

Regarding the first four on this list, I have had the pleasure of giving brief descriptive and historical presentations and performances of each during Dr. William Schimmel’s excellent and excitingly diverse three-day online seminars for 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023.

The final one of these five pieces, “Serebrier’s Danza Ritual”, will be my contribution to the series during this summer’s production at, as always, the last weekend (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday) of July.

In addition I have composed two little suites, entitled “Tidbits 1” and “Tidbits 2”, for the intermediate level student and performed them for the Seminars as a supplement to my presentations. I will be happy to send free copies of these scores to anyone who may be interested in playing them.

See Dr. Schimmel’s announcement and description of this year’s wonderful and, as always, multi-varied Seminar program: See article just above.

Western Swing Jamboree Review

by Laura Niland, President of the San Antonio Accordion Association
Western Swing
Western SwingOn July 27th,2024 Innovative Accordion Music Productions (IAMP) presented The Western Swing Jamboree concert at the Brauntex Theatre in downtown New Braunfels, Texas, with accordionist Lori Beth Brooke and The Derrieres ( Roger and Leo Eilts) and Cameron Bradfute, cowboy poet sharing stories and original music about the pioneering spirit of those who settled the West. Families brought their children dressed in western outfits complete with cowboy hats and boots. Each attendee received a bandana in honor of The National Day of the Cowboy and celebrated with a great evening of music, comedy and family fun. Visitors came from across Texas and Mexico. The audience celebrated with resounding YEEHAW, waving their bandanas throughout the show!

This was the first collaboration for Lori Brooke from Austin, Texas and the Eilts brothers from Kansas City, who are an outstanding back-up group, hence their name, The Derrieres. With Brooke on accordion and The Derrieres combining their vocal harmonies with their talent on upright bass, guitar and fiddle, a fabulous new sound was created with Lori Brooke known as the Female Yodeler of the Year and Academy of Western Artists Female Western Performer Awardee. This unique collaboration will undoubtedly be repeated in the future. The reviews from the show are still arriving, with many stating it was one of the best shows they had ever seen, giving special recognition to these talented musicians, their performance and professionalism.

Brooke included many original songs from her latest CD, “The Light of the Moon”, including “Texas Star”, “Bride of the Brazos”, “Guys love Chicks that Yodel”, “Light of the Moon” and others. Lori’s music tells a story about the pioneering spirit of women and their contributions to settling the West, in a both humorous and poignant presentation. Also included were special performances by The Derrieres including “Home on the Range” in both English and Italian, as they are scheduled for a performance gig in Italy in August! The Derrieres perform regularly with the award-winning 3 Trails West also producing a weekly program on the Internet Radio entitled “The American Road Show” where they explore the many facets of American music.

Many thanks go Lori Brooke, Roger & Leo Eilts, Cameron Bradfute and to the Brauntex Theatre and their Staff for creating a memorable experience for all. In addition, IAMP thanks The City off New Braunfels Arts & Heritage Commission for
partial funding for this project. You can learn more about Innovative Accordion Music Productions, a 501c3 nonprofit at www.InnovativeAccordion.org

Mario Tacca and Mary Mancini Entertain on August 23

by Rita Davidson Barnea, Editor USA Accordion News
Mario Tacca poster
Mario Tacca and Mary ManciniJoin accordionist Mario Tacca and vocalist Mary Mancini for an evening of music from around the world on Friday, August 23, 2024 from 7 - 10:PM at Rini’s Restaurant in Elmsford, New York. For reservations: 914-592-6799.

Spending the evening with them will provide you with a night of fabulous live music and delicious food. They are a unique duo, entertaining with an eclectic repertoire sure to please everyone. Put one of their performances on your calendar and you will be happy you attended!

Mario Tacca was born in Italy. During his childhood, his family moved to the Alsace Lorraine region of France where he began his musical studies. This is where his love and intense desire to play the accordion began. He loved the sound! He would pick up the accordion and imitate some of the songs his mother used to sing. The desire and love never diminished, despite having to walk three miles weekly to his teacher with his instrument strapped to his back!

In France, he was the winner of many regional and national accordion competitions. He became a world champion, winning the World Cup of Italy, the Grand Prix of Paris, the US National Competition and the International Accordion competition held at Carnegie Hall in New York City. Mario Tacca dazzles audiences across the US and around the world with his unmatched virtuosity on the accordion and his exciting interpretations of international music, the classics and pop.

Mario has recently been seen on MTV in a commercial for a pilot Italian Food program. He was seen on the Food Network in a commercial for “Throwdown with Bobby Flay.” His latest recording, “Journey Through the Classics” features great melodies from the Classic Repertoire. He and Mary have released their latest duet CD, “Ricordi.” It is a collection of Italian melodies, featuring Mary and Mario together, and, Mario performing solo.

Internationally acclaimed vocal artist Mary Mancini has been featured in the New York Times, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, and the Journal News and has performed in a variety of venues around the world. Singing in eight languages, Mary draws from a deep repertory reservoir. She is adept at pop, show tunes, operatic arias, sacred music and has received worldwide acclaim. Le Republicain Lorrain, in Alsace-Lorraine, France, writes that the “purity of her voice, the ease with which she interpreted the most difficult pieces showed that she is a great artist.”

Mary has headlined numerous concert halls and festivals in North America, Europe, and China. She has performed at the Garden State Arts Center, Resorts International Casino Hotel, Taj Mahal in Atlantic City, and Mohegan Sun Resort Casino in CT. Mary, with Mario Tacca, completed two concert tours of China. As guests of the China Ministry of Culture, they toured five cities in three weeks and performed with three symphony orchestras. Joining them on their tour was highly acclaimed Chinese tenor, Douglas Song. In addition to performing with the symphony orchestras, some of the most memorable moments included a performance held at the 1600 seat True Color Jazz Supper Club in the booming city of Shenzhen and in the 3500 seat Golden Opera House.

In addition to a busy concert schedule, which keeps her on the road for over 200 days a year, Mary also maintains an active recording career. On “Canzoni dal Cuore,” her CD of Italian Love Songs & Arias, Mary sings with passion many of the classic songs from the Italian repertoire. The album also includes her own composition, “Preghiera, Ninna-Nanna” set to the music of Pietro Mascagni. Together, Mary and Mario have just released their latest duet CD, “Ricordi.” It is a collection of Italian melodies, featuring Mary and Mario together, and, Mario performing solo. The Red Cross selected Mary’s original composition, “With Open Arms,” to accompany its video tribute to the September 11 victims. Mary was presented with the Lifetime
Achievement Award by the Order of the Sons of Italy in America for her ongoing outstanding musical contribution to the arts.

Mary Mancini and Mario Tacca are available for: concert and show performances, church weddings, piano and accordion lessons, wedding receptions, special events, corporate events and In-home/private performances.

Bryant Park Presents “Accordions Around the World”

by Rita Davidson Barnea, Editor USA Accordion News
The free annual global music festival returns curated by Ariana Hellerman. This annual celebration of accordionists returns on September 5, 2024 at 7:PM with a rare New York City appearance from the Louisianabased, three-time Grammy-nominated Zydeco star, Dwayne Dopsie, as well as Latin funk steeped in Dominican styles of music from Afro Dominicano and powerhouse Haitian collective Lakou Mizik.

Excerpts from Bryant Park website: 2024 Grammy Award nominee and “America’s Hottest Accordion” winner, Dwayne Dopsie plays high-energy zydeco that keeps you wanting more. Dwayne hails from one of the most influential Zydeco families in the world. Although inspired by tradition, he has developed his own style that defies existing stereotypes and blazes a refreshingly distinct path for 21st century Zydeco music.

Dwayne attributes his musical abilities to his father, Rockin’ Dopsie, Sr., a pioneer of Zydeco music. He has played the accordion since age seven and states, “This is my calling – Zydeco music is in my blood and it is my heart and soul.” This singer/songwriter and accordionist has performed in 40 countries and also in hundreds of cities across the United States, Europe, Brazil, Panama and Canada since debuting his band at age 19.

The funk-fusion combo Afro Dominicano infuses their songs with Afro-Caribbean soul: a blend of Dominican folkloric styles and pop influences that includes merengue, bachata, samba, reggae, punk and R&B, all filtered through a uniquely New York sensibility. The group's mix of sweet vocals, accordion, guitar, traditional percussion and electric bass sparks high-energy riffs and romantic balladry that eludes the pigeonhole of genre in favor of genuine human connection. The social justiceinspired collective of Dominican-American musicians celebrates the forthcoming release of their newest album with a night of fresh jams and good times, featuring music by DJ Bembona.

Lakou Mizik is a powerhouse collective of Haitian roots music with a soulful energy and a mix of styles that feels mystical and familiar at the same time. In the wake of Haiti’s devastating earthquake the band came together to show the world that their country was much more than the sum of headlines that were being shot around the globe. Today with their positive messages and roots revival music, they have become one of Haiti’s hottest exports and have gained an international following with their critically acclaimed debut album Wa Di Yo and their mystical, soulful, dance party inducing live shows.

Belony Beniste is Lakou Mizik’s accordion player - and plays a crucial role in tying the band’s sound to the country’s musical traditions. Hailing from the rural North West of the country, Beniste grew up with folk and Vodou music all around. A
highly sought after musician in Port-au-Prince, he also plays with the country’s best-known twoubadou singer Ti Coca and comes with a deep wealth of knowledge of Haiti's classic repertoire. Beniste represents a growing number of Haitian accordion players who are keeping the vintage twoubadou tradition alive in Haiti.

“The 2024 season of Picnic Performances is our most ambitious yet,” Dan Fishman, Bryant Park’s vice president of public programming, tells Time Out New York. “Bryant Park will host internationally renowned dance companies, Grammy-winning musicians, a fully staged production of Tosca, a centennial celebration for jazz vocalist Sarah Vaughan, and a grand finale featuring an all-star lineup of musicians performing the music of James Bond.

As usual, there are no tickets required (it’s free) and there will be more than 700 picnic blankets for audience members to borrow and chairs available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Bryant Park Picnic Performances presented by Bank of America is a free outdoor festival that welcomes all New Yorkers to experience the city’s vibrant arts and culture. The series provides a platform for extraordinary artists and serves as a vital outdoor venue for a wide array of New York’s cultural institutions.
