I invite you to send me your comments and ideas about them or suggestions for future articles. One of my goals as National Editor is to bring an eclectic assortment of accordion news to you all, in other words, something for everyone! I welcome and would appreciate your sending me your ideas. I support the concept of featuring all types of accordionists and accordion music in the news. When you read about all the possibilities of the accordion, you will realize that the accordion has a great positive image and truly is the perfect instrument spanning all genres and types of music. The Portatos | Modernized Accordion Band are a group of young musicians who play the accordion - in a new fresh modern way! Five accordions with a bass, drummer and violinist ready to take the stage!  Prominent New Zealand conductor, composer and arranger Gary Daverne has written a book titled "From the Podium (Musical Moments of Mystery, Madness, Mayhem and Magic) While Conducting Orchestras".Gary Daverne has strong links with accordion, with many compositions for accordion, CD's, as well as many performances with solo accordionists conducting symphony and accordion orchestras. Quite a few pictures and pages are about the many accordion events and concerts in the USA that Gary has participated in. Gary Daverne has been honored by the Confédération Internationale des Accordéonistes (CIA) for his "outstanding contributions to the accordion movement" and so, with this background, it is no surprise, that several chapters of the book relate to his many performances with accordionists in Europe, UK, North America, China, New Zealand, Australia and even Turkey. Gary Daverne has received many other honors for his music, including the New Zealand Order of Merit from Queen Elizabeth II as Head of the Commonwealth. The book has many pictures of accordion related events. Its a fun read for anyone with a musical interest and especially interesting for those who conduct or play in orchestras.  SGM Manny Bobenrieth will perform with the United States Army Strings at the AAA Gala Banquet on Saturday, July 11, 2015. He will also present a workshop called "Playing for Uncle Sam".Born in Concepcion, Chile, Manuel Bobenrieth began studying the accordion at age five. He studied at Montgomery College in Rockville, Maryland and received a Bachelor of Music Degree in Performance from The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., becoming the first accordionist to graduate with such a degree from that institution. Mr. Bobenrieth has performed in many different musical contexts including Broadway musicals, Contemporary Music Forum and the Kennedy Center Opera House Orchestra. He has appeared with legendary jazz guitarist Charlie Byrd in a tribute to the music of jazz accordionist Art Van Damme. He can also be heard on the soundtrack to the Discovery channel television series, "The Great Chefs" as a guest artist with the Charlie Byrd Trio. Recently, The Manny Bobenrieth Sextet was featured at the world famous Blues Alley Jazz Club and performed to a sold out audience. As accordionist for Norwegian Caribbean Lines from 1984-1986, Mr. Bobenrieth toured Europe and the Caribbean aboard the SS Norway. In 1986, Mr. Bobenrieth became a member of the United Stated States Army Band. As the accordionist with the Army Strolling Strings, he has performed for three Presidents, including Ronald Reagan, George Bush, and Bill Clinton at numerous White House State Dinners in honor of foreign dignitaries such as Margaret Thatcher, Mikhail Gorbachev, Prince Charles and Princess Diana, Boris Yeltsin, King Hussein, the Emperor of Japan and Nelson Mandela. In addition to his performing duties, Mr. Bobenrieth has written many arrangements for the Army Strings, which have been featured at the State Department, the Vice President's residence and The White House. The park will be filled with the sounds of wonderful accordionists playing all types of music from France to Columbia, Balkans to Jazz, Cajun to Klezmer and much more with accordions, harmoniums, concertinas, and bandoneons. | The University of Missouri - Kansas City (UMKC) Chamber Accordion Ensemble are delighted to appear in Lisle, IL (Chicago) as part of the 75th Anniversary Accordionists and Teachers Guild, International (ATG) Festival from July 22-25, 2015.
All players are alumni of the University of Missouri - Kansas City, and former members of the renowned UMKC Accordion Orchestra. The players make their living in various careers, but each have remained devoted to promoting the accordion and its varied repertoire, which includes transcriptions, commissions and other original works. The UMKC Chamber Accordion Ensemble under the direction of Joan C. Sommers, has recently performed in Chicago, San Francisco and Kansas City. In addition, they have participated in the USA contributions to World Accordion Day, when videos of their past performances were broadcast during the live presentation. This year, the UMKC Chamber Accordion Ensemble will be joined by Macedonian violin soloist Filip Lazovski, a violinist with the Kansas City Symphony Orchestra, who will be featured as soloist on "Por una Cabeza" by Carlos Gardel (arr. J. C. Sommers) and as a member of the ensemble on Hans Boll’s Immortal. The ensemble will also perform "Danse Bacchanale" by Saint-Saens (arr. J. C. Sommers) and "Gigue" by Gretry, "Decade" by John Darnall with Jeff Lisenby as soloist and "Blue Swan and Fuga" a new composition by former ATG President and current Board of Director Stas Venglevski. |

To this end this year’s event was a great success. The event began on June 21 – the Summer Solstice - with a magical moment provided by Merlin the Wizard (Bill Palmer) who unveiled the Convention stage banner to open the event. We can say for 2015, the accordion stars were truly aligned and many felt this was the best event ever with something for everyone from start to finish! Riders in the Sky came onstage after Merlin and gave a five star performance at our Monday welcome concert. For many this was worth the price of admission alone to see this Grammy award-winning group perform in an intimate concert setting. Our grand finale featured five-time world champion Grayson Masefield. Grayson’s performance displayed a stunning show of technique and musical artistry. His program included a delightful variety of music, which captivated the audience and brought them to their feet. Each morning began with classes and workshops followed by a luncheon program. Afternoons were again filled with classes and orchestra rehearsals. Each evening included a dinner with a concert. These exceptional concerts featured Grayson Masefield, Joey Miskulin, Walter Ostanek, Mary Tokarski, Stas Venglevski, Joan Sommers, The Europa Trio, Pete Barbutti, Paul Betken & Jerry Cigler Duet, Gordon Kohl, Chuck Henry, Gina Brannelli and our grand finale performance by the Las Vegas International Accordion Orchestra. This orchestra is made up of attendees who volunteer their talent to be a part of the orchestra under the direction of Professor Joan Sommers. Each of these concerts was planned to showcase the musical versatility of the accordion, whether it be Country, Broadway, Jazz, Classic, Polka or Rock. Attendees are encouraged to take the stage at Club Concerto in an intimate cabaret setting after the evening concert. Many of these after hour concerts continued until the wee hours of the morning. The Las Vegas International Accordion Convention has for 16 years brought the best in accordion entertainment and education to Las Vegas with professional lighting and sound to create a week of magic for those attending. This year we saw attendees from as far away as Australia, New Zealand, France, almost every province of Canada, Mexico and from all over the United States. The following are comments from some of our attendees. The entire week was filled with outstanding artists! If you weren't there.... you missed one of the best, most exciting 4 days of shows with plenty of variety with different styles of music, entertainment and lots of surprises too!  William Schimmel’s new CD, ‘Theatre of the Accordion’ will be released on Roven Records at the end of July. The Album features solo works written and realized by William Schimmel. The guest artist on the CD is Wynton Marsalis.  "Weird Al" presented a concert on June 28, 2015 singing parodies of popular songs, which is famous for doing. Pharrell's popular song, "Happy" was turned into "Tacky". With his four piece band, he made fun of songsters of today and of the past. The show took place at the Peabody Opera House, Saint Louis, Missouri.His concerts are always sold out. He is also famous for recreating popular songs as polkas, using his accordion. Alfred Matthew "Weird Al" Yankovic is an American singer, songwriter, parodist, record producer, satirist, actor, music video director, film producer, and author. He is known for his humorous songs that make light of popular culture and often parody specific songs by contemporary musical acts, original songs that are style pastiches of the work of other acts, and polka medleys of several popular songs, featuring his favored instrument, the accordion. Since his first-aired comedy song in 1976, he has sold more than 12 million albums (as of 2007),recorded more than 150 parody and original songs and has performed more than 1,000 live shows. His works have earned him four Grammy Awards and a further 11 nominations, four gold records, and six platinum records in the United States. Yankovic's first top ten Billboard album (Straight Outta Lynwood) and single ("White & Nerdy") were both released in 2006, nearly three decades into his career. His latest album, "Mandatory Fun"(2014), became his first number one album on its debut week. With many costume changes and constant videos on the screen, the show is high energy and full of laughs. And, the accordion always has its special place in his shows. |

| The Peter Soave Music Academy {PSMA} 2015 Dates include the 14 day seminar from July 26 to August 9, 2015 and the VIP: PSMA Intense from September 6-13, 2015 in Sauris, Italy. Sauris is a tiny alpine village nestled deep within the Dolomite mountains of Italy, bordering Austria, approximately 2 hours north of Venice. The Hotel Morgenleit provides rooms of 1, 2, 3 or 4 people, with private bathroom and fully furnished with television, minifridge, telephone, toiletries. Guests will enjoy the common experience of residing at a quaint and sparkling clean hotel resort, fresh and clean mountain air and nature, regional culture and outstanding regional cuisine. The faculty includes Peter and Mady Soave. Due to prior touring commitments Stas will not be with us this summer but will return to PSMA in 2016. Mary Tokarski (Connecticut, USA) is an outstanding artist, a dynamic educator and newly appointed President of the American Accordionists' Association (AAA). Her performances are bombastic and her dedication is tremendous. As a friend and musical collaborator, Madeleine and I are delighted to have Mary with us. Ralf Bethke (Germany) has been with us from the beginning. Often referred to as "Doktor Ralf", he can do wonders on your instrument! Ralf is a passionate accordion technician, player, and teacher. He distributes the Cavagnolo instrument line in Germany. Ralph will demonstrate the latest Cava Digit as well as the Roland V-Accordion. Nicholas Couvet (France), is a lifelong accordionist who has a passion for the music of Motion Trio. Certified physiotherapist working in Germany, Nicolas will offer presentations on pain and/or injuries common to accordionists/musicians.This PSMA program commenced 2 years ago with our dear friend from Lausanne, Dr. Véronique Moret, who will assist. Duilio Dobrin (Texas, USA), was born in Buenos Aires. I first met Duilio 20 years ago when he invited me to perform bandoneon solo with his orchestra, The Florida Philharmonic. The program featured Duilio's arrangements for bandoneon solo and full orchestra. He was also the conductor! We became friends and have since collaborated numerous times in Europe and North America. Duilio is a Master Musician: Conductor, Composer/Arranger, Pianist, Educator, and Scholar. He is generous, talented, kind and my good friend. Visit his website: http://www.duiliodobrin.com. -Eddie Monteiro (New Jersey, USA), is of Portuguese descent. Eddie is one of the most unique jazz accordionists of all time. His harmonic skills are mind boggling and his music is beautiful. I have been a fan of Eddie Monteiro's music since first hearing his 1988 recording. His talent is colossal and his personality is large. I once drove 12 hours straight to hear him play at Michael's Pub in Manhattan. Enjoyed his performance and drove another 12 hours back to Detroit. I would do it again! Viatcheslav Semionov (Russia), is a renowned composer, concert artist & pedagogue. 'Slava' is a pillar of the concert accordion world. Professor at the Gnessin Institute of Music in Moscow, his students have won numerous gold medals in the most prestigious international competitions. Many of his compositions for accordion, namely "Don Rhapsody", are becoming standard repertoire. Slava is an accordion ball of fire who promises to bring great flavor and color. Our sincere gratitude to the Pigini Accordion Factory for sponsoring Slava's travel accommodations. Much fascinating information about Semionov can be found on the internet. I particularly enjoy this 2013 interview. I am honored that such esteemed artists are on board with us. Their presence and contributions bring a higher level of meaning and support to the profound musical ideals for which we strive.  On June 25, 2015, Joanna Arnold Darrow performed the important accordion parts with the Philadelphia Orchestra in "The Godfather" Live. This was a presentation of the film The Godfather with the Philadelphia Orchestra performing the sound track live. Winner of three Academy Awards, including Best Picture, The Godfather came to life on the big screen with Nino Rota’s iconic and haunting score. Ranked as one of the best movies of all time by the American Film Institute, The Godfather music with a live orchestra makes an amazing impact. Joanna Arnold Darrow has brought the accordion to the attention of local professional musicians and to members of the Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra, for which she now serves as staff accordionist. On Saturday, the Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra performs with Andrea Bocelli and Juanes at the Festival of Families for Pope Francis and on Sunday at the Papal Mass in PA. In 2000, Joanna performed the Tango of David Argento with the Philadelphia Orchestra and the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam with the Kennett Square Symphony.  Joan Grauman will present a workshop, "Rhythms and Harmonies of Bulgarian and Macedonian Folk Music" at the 2015 ATG Festival July 22-25, 2015. This workshop is designed for accordionists who enjoy the unusual rhythms and beautiful melodies of the Balkan region, but need a little “push” to try to tackle this music on their own. Joan will introduce accordionists to the “mathematical system” of Balkan rhythms. Within minutes, what seemed difficult and confusing will become exciting and fun. She will give out music for three lovely Macedonian songs, so bring your accordions and music stands! The art of the hauntingly beautiful Balkan harmonies will also be introduced and dances demonstrated. Joan Grauman, a piano performance major, international folk dancer and choreographer, switched to the piano accordion in her early 20s to play the beautiful music of the Balkan countries. She loved the exciting melodies and the intricacies of the region’s rhythms and dances. Joan was the accordionist in the popular Balkan dance band, BAMCO from 1983 to 2001. Cory Pesaturo (“C Pez”) is a graduate of the prestigious New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, MA, where he was the first musician ever to major and graduate in the accordion. Pesaturo is one of only four accordionists to win a World Championships competition on both the Acoustic and Digital Accordion, and is the only person to also win a World Championship in Jazz. Pesaturo's extensive resumé includes appearances at the White House for President and Mrs. Clinton on four different occasions, starting at age 12. On one of those occasions, he became the youngest person ever to perform at a State Dinner, performing with the Marine Strolling Strings for the President of Hungary. He has since performed at seven other events for the Clintons and continues to keep in touch as proved by his 14 letters from the First family. He has judged accordion competitions in the US, Canada, and Europe, in addition to music competitions in general. On his Classical side which is less known, a win at 16 years old in a Concerto competition at the New England Conservatory of Music, gave Cory the rare opportunity to perform with the Brockton Symphony Orchestra as a featured soloist and on the Jazz side, Cory recorded two CD’s with saxophone legend George Garzone and his famous band “The Fringe” at age 19, and has performed and become friends with Jazz and Music Legend Wynton Marsalis. Cory has developed his own electric accordion, and already has made the first ever skinned accordion that includes a symmetric midi lighting system attached to the keys. Cory will perform on Monday, July 26, 2015 for the Milwaukee Accordion Club. In June, Cory was a featured guest of the Extreme Speed Motorsports and Tequila Patron team at the most famous motor race in the World, the 24 Hours of Le Mans (France). He also ran tires for both cars the entire 24 hours and talked strategy for the team. Cory added, "I played a private dinner for one of the heads of NASCAR, Jim France, head of Fiat, the Designer of the current Indycar, Andrea Tosso, all put together by one of my Heros and new fan, Giampaolo Dallara, the most famous, prestigious, and most important Chassis Builder in automotive history.This was in Italy."   Recologie Klezmer Series presents Sy Kushner and Jeremy Brown on Wenesday July 1,2015 at Recologie Performance Space, 49 Lawton Street, New Rochelle, New York at 7:PM. Recologie serves gourmet vegan and vegetarian food.The Recologie Klezmer Series is held on the first Wednesday of each month and hosts some of New York's top klezmer musicians in an informal setting. The audience is encouraged to ask questions and engage in a dialogue with the musicians about klezmer and Jewish music in general. The July 1 performance will feature Sy Kushner, accordionist/composer who is curating the series and Jeremy Brown, violinist. As a founding member and Musical Director of the Mark 3, Sy Kushner, in the 1960s, performed with the group all over the country including a concert before thousands at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. As a member of The Accordion Symphony Society of N.Y., Sy performed at Town Hall and the Singer Bowl at the 1964 World's Fair. Sy has been involved with Jewish music all his life. Sy grew up in a household full of cantorial and klezmer music. His father was a drummer and frequently took young Sy to gigs. In the 1960's Sy specialized in contemporary Chassidic music as well as Israeli folk dance music. Twenty years ago Sy transcribed early 1900's klezmer music from the original recordings and published two volumes. He then formed a group called The Sy Kushner Jewish Music Ensemble and released a CD titled "KlezSqueeze" which contained many of the tunes in those books. Sy then focused on composing for the first time in many years and has released 4 CD's of his original music with his ensemble. Jeremy Brown grew up playing classical violin and discovered improvisation and folk music during college at Berkeley, California. Since that time, Jeremy has played many styles of music, including klezmer, bluegrass, rock, and swing. In 2001, Jeremy released an album of original music titled,"This Year in St. Louis". The album was very well received and and led to performances around the Midwest with Jeremy's bluegrass band, "Treif". After moving to New York in 2004, he became an active member of the city's Jewish music scene. He was a member of Art Bailey's Orkestra Popilar. And is a member of Pitom, an experimental Jewish rock quartet with a recently released CD on John Zorn's Tzaddik Records. | The Jarosh Accordion Ensemble from Calgary, Canada will perform at the 2015 ATG Festival in Lisle, Illinois in July. Jarosh has been a dedicated music instructor and orchestra conductor for 35 years. Teaching music began as a way to finance her visual arts degree and has since become her full time career. She was introduced to her first accordion lesson at age 14, and received a grade 10 practical diploma, with honors, at 19. Shortly after college she found herself teaching in three studios with up to 120 students per week.
Since 1984, Maureen has operated her own music studio teaching accordion, piano and music theory from her home. In coordination with other local accordionists in Calgary, Maureen and her colleagues have created a not for profit society to promote the instrument in Alberta and the Calgary area. The Accordion Association of Calgary is now celebrating its 26th year of cultural excellence. With the collaboration of all past and present students, Maureen has created a dynamic accordion orchestra. The Jarosh Ensemble is an entity of its own. Under Maureen’s direction the group presents original, innovative and eclectic music for an accordion ensemble and has travelled to music festivals all over North America as well as hosted international accordion groups on several occasions. Local opportunities have given Maureen the chance to showcase the Jarosh Accordion Ensemble in performances with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, Buckwheat Zydeco, and on stage with the Canadian artists The Barenaked Ladies. Her commitment to community has led to benefit performances for UNICEF, Music missions in Central America, Haiti earthquake relief effort and support of arts and culture throughout southern Alberta. The Jarosh ensemble performed at the 2013 Coupe Mondiale in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. Maureen’s future projects will be inspired and diverse. One such project will be working with the Canadian Music Centre to present more accordion information and content at the Cantos Museum and concerts to showcase the accordion in a more current context. |

 It is the 21st year of the AAA Seminars! We still have our same loyal participants who have been with us from the very beginning:Dr Robert Young Mc Mahan, Micki Goodman Schimmel and Paul Stein - along with Will Holshouser, Benjamin Ickies, John Foti, Art Bailey, Doug Makofka, Erica Marie Mancini and many others. Most members or the Brooklyn Accordion Club will be participating - this includes Mayumi Miyaoka, Peter Flint, Denise Koncelik and a performing group called Bachtopus. In addition to accordionists, we will have a theremin player (Elizabeth Brown), a sho player (Michael Dames), a trombonist, violinist, concert pianist, harpist, guitarist and a few special guests who will appear un-announced. We will have many world premieres: Dr. Mc Mahan, Dave Soldier, David First, David Stoler, Elizabeth Brown, Normali Fenn, Peter Flint, Milica Paranosic, Gene Pritsker, Dan Cooper, Peter Jarvis, Art Bailey and myself - My new CD: "The Theatre of the Accordion" will be unveiled at this time as well. Our initial intent of the Seminars starting with the first one back in 1994 was: to build a strong artistic accordion community in the New York Area, a community of artists that could communicate on an equal level to the rest of New York’s diverse artistic community.All of our workshops and performances will bear this in mind. We also did surveys - in the past and now - asking participants and would be participants what they really felt they needed at the Seminars. The response was almost unanimous: a sense of belonging to something that could prepare them intellectually as well as practically for just about any musical situation in a competitive music would - not just the accordion world. And we maintain that philosophy as our goal to this very day. The Seminars are not just a series of workshops and concerts. | New Yorkers were offered a rare musical experience when the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Macedonia presented the acclaimed Macedonian accordion Trio AkordioM in a free concert at their Gallery MC in the heart of New York City. Each a virtuoso in their own right, the dynamic and skillful ensemble on their American debut in New York, comprises Zorica Karakutovska, Bojan Volchevski and Filip Stamevski, all from Skopje, Macedonia. The trio began performing together a few years ago, but each has previously been part of various other performing ensembles. Trio AkordioM members Bojan Volchevski and Filip Stamevski are both Karakutovska’s former students and now perform together as musical colleagues. Their concert appearances are considerable, with performances in Macedonia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Croatia, France, Portugal, Luxembourg, Italy, and now the USA. In addition to heading the accordion program on the Faculty of Music in Skopje, leader of the group, Professor Zorica Karakutovska, is also the President of Ljubiteli na Klasicnata Muzika in Skopje, the Association of Accordionists - Macedonia, a Premiere Voting member of the Confédération Internationale des Accordéonistes (CIA). Trio AkordioM performed a variety of repertoire including transcriptions of works from other instruments, trio arrangements of accordion works as well as original music written specifically written for the group. The concert included three works by resident composer Bete Ilin, a Professor at the State Music and Ballet School Center “Ilija Nikolovski - Luj” in Skopje. With more than 50 works in her Opus, in addition to numerous accordion works for solo, chamber music (for multiple accordions and also accordion with other instruments) and an accordion concerto, Bete has written vocal works, ensembles pieces, as well as compositions for violin, clarinet, piano and bassoon. The trio presented three of Bete's works including her ‘Macedonian Paraphrase No. 1’, ‘No. 2’, and ‘No. 3’. These captivating compositions composed in a contemporary style, showcased the complex rhythmic structures of Macedonian folklore (5/8, 7/8, 9/8) while eluding to the inspiration from traditional Macedonian songs. In 2014, Bete Ilin was the most frequently performed Macedonian composer in Cultural Centres throughout the Republic of Macedonia. Bete was in attendance at the concert, along with her parents who traveled to New York to attend the concert. Trio AkordioM, performing completely by memory, engaged the audience in a captivating musical journey as they delivered their concert with technical prowess and engaging charisma. From the delicate transparency of Mozart to the magnificent orchestral grandeur of Elmer Bernstein's ‘Magnificent Seven’, from Piazzolla's intricate ‘Fuga Y Misterio’, to the entertaining arrangement of Strauss's ‘Radetzky March’, the trio awed the audience with their musicality and elegantly presented interpretations. Each performance drew extended applause, culminating in several standing ovations as they presented a series of encores including ‘Tango for Claude’, by Richard Galliano. The program was as follows: ‘Macedonian Paraphrase No.1’, by Bete Ilin, ‘Divertimento D Major’, (1st mov.) by Mozart, ‘Semenovna’, by E. Sam Falcetti of Springfield, Mass. is the founder of the New England Digital Accordion Orchestra. The group's first performance took place in April 2013 at the 51st Annual New England Music Festival in Newton, Mass. Before my concert last week at the Las Vegas International Accordion Convention, Dermot Hussey, a Jazz Host on SeriusXM Satellite radio (CH 67) picked up on a CD review made by Robert Reich, the music critic of the Chicago Tribune. Dermott related that he would feature several tunes from my CD "PAUL'S TURN" on his podcast show called the "Sunday-Riff, 21 June." The portion of the show featuring my CD is 26 minutes. He plays 4 cuts from the CD--"If I Only Had a Brain;" "Line for Lyons;" "Watch What Happens" and "Meditation." The CD is done in a quartet format with myself, Stan Sorenson, guitar, Rusty Jones, drums, and Sean Brogan, acoustic bass.
