What Are You Doing For May 6th World Accordion Day?

by Harley Jones
WAD
WAD LogoWhat are you doing for World Accordion Day (WAD) to promote the accordion in your country? WAD is on May 6th, which is the day the accordion was patented in 1829.

WAD was started in 2009 by the Confédération Internationale des Accordéonistes (CIA) and has been very successful, generating a lot of positive publicity for the accordion. A key part of this event is the WAD website.

Every association, group, orchestra, performer and teacher, is asked to actively support this event by encouraging national and local accordion activities to happen in their country on this day or the weekend either side of 6th May WAD if that should be more convenient.

Everyone can register their WAD activity on the website and send a report of their event after, for that website.

No event is too big or too small. ALL accordion events celebrating World Accordion Day are welcome. This is a CIA promotion for the accordion in which every accordion enthusiast can participate and help bring our accordion world together as well as strongly promote the accordion.

Joseph Soprani Releases New CD

by Rita Davidson Barnea, Editor USA Accordion News
Joe soprani
New CDVideo: “Dizzy Fingers: The Life of Joe Soprani”

Accordionist Joseph Soprani has released his newest CD: “Great American Songbook”. The CD was released on February 23, 2023 with musicians:
Joseph Soprani - accordion
Dave Posmontier - piano
Pat Mercuri - guitar
Bill Zinno - bass
Gusten Rudolph - drums

Produced by Brendan McGeehan
Engineered, mixed, and mastered by Brendan McGeehan
Recorded at Elm Street Studios, Conshohocken, PA

Producer Brendan McGeehan shares, “I am thrilled to announce that at 88 years young, virtuoso accordionist Joe Soprani has a new album out. This has been years in the making and we are all thrilled with how it came out. We matched Joe with an ensemble of excellent players and had a couple of really fun days in the studio. Check it out!'

Selections include: Breezin' Along With the Breeze , Fly Me to the Moon, Stardust, Blue Moon, Georgia On My Mind, Hey There, Estralita, More, I’m in the Mood for Love, Cheek to Cheek, Lullaby of Birdland, Once in a While, and Caravan.

The “Great American Songbook” is available as a Digital Album for $10: Streaming + Download Includes unlimited streaming via the free Bandcamp app, plus high-quality download in MP3. The Physical CD for $20: Compact Disc (CD) + Digital Album

Accordionist Joseph Soprani has enjoyed a long and amazing musical career. In addition to performing in Broadway shows such as "Fiddler on the Roof", "Zorba", "Cabaret" and "Irma la Douce", Joe has performed in world premieres of "Frida,” a musical that called for a virtuoso accordionist and "Another Kind of Hero,” a musical which featured him on stage for an entire scene.

Joe, who appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show and won the Arthur Godfrey Show, appeared with TV Star Nell Carter in a "Colors of Freedom" production at the Convention Center in Philadelphia. He also appeared with Peter Nero and the Philly Pops playing a special arrangement by Nero with Soprano Evelyn de LaRosa.

In November of 1997, Soprani became the first accordionist to perform in "La Traviata" by Verdi presented by the Opera Company of Philadelphia, at the Academy of Music in Philadelphia. Klaus Arp, the opera conductor from Germany, decided to use the accordion in the small ensemble on stage during "La Banda" sections.

Joe also performed with Russell Watson on Good Morning America, and continues to promote the accordion as a serious instrument at various clubs and organizations. His workshops at schools and colleges, where he demonstrated his skills as performer and arranger to young composers and arrangers, have been well received.

In his 80’s, Joe Soprani is going strong, always busy practicing, performing, and planning his next musical adventure. Over the years, I have attended many of his live performances as soloist and with orchestras, including his 2019 performance with the 65 piece Philly Pops Orchestra in Disney’s “The Nightmare Before Christmas”. Joe said, “ The score to “The Nightmare Before Christmas has a very powerful score and an interesting accordion part.”

Info about the above video: “The accordion has brought Joe Soprani some of the most unique performance experiences imaginable. With his squeezebox in tow, Joe has collaborated with Bon Jovi, performed at the White House, with Pavarotti, on national television, and more. He has even survived a plane crash (though his first instrument did not). In his 80 years, Joe continues to work on and perfect his craft with seemingly endless energy and enthusiasm, while also passing on his knowledge to his many students.

"Dizzy Fingers: the Life of Joe Soprani" explores a remarkable life filled with music. With the help of interviews with people in Joe's life, including Obie O'Brien (Bon Jovi), Susan Ashbaker (Opera Company of Philadelphia), and Joe Parente (president, Local 77), the film examines the true talents of a masterful musician. Not only that, but "Dizzy Fingers" provides a historical context to the instrument itself, with insight by ethnomusicologist, Marion Jacobson, who describes the rise and subsequent fall of the accordion due to the arrival of the Beatles. With the accordion seeing a great resurgence in contemporary pop and indie music, the time is now to recognize the man who never left it behind.”

Joseph Natoli Announces Release of Vol. 3 of his Chameleon CD’s

by Joseph Natoli
Joseph Natoli
ChameleonChameleon contentsVideo: (3) "Nine Children's Pieces" (for digital & acoustic acc orch) composed and performed by Joseph Natoli
This is a full accordion orchestra version of a solo free bass accordion piece written for young performers.

Joseph Natoli would like to announce the release of Volume 3 of his Chameleon series of CDs. As Joseph indicates in his CD liner notes:

“When it comes to composition, I consider myself a musical chameleon, adapting to any style according to the need and purpose of the composition, just as a chameleon adapts immediately to its current environment. Therefore, I have written music in every possible genre, from contemporary Avant Garde to quasi-minimalist, jazz, Classical, Baroque, ethnic polkas & waltzes, cinematic, neo-Romantic, ragtime, Latin, and even Pop. As with Volumes 1 & 2 of my Chameleon collection, Volume 3 hopes to demonstrate and celebrate the diversity of that creativity.”

There literally is something for everyone on this new CD. Track 1 kicks off with a huge and spectacular “Accordion Fanfare” for digital & acoustic accordion orchestra where the composer is playing all five parts of the accordion orchestra along with the harp and percussion parts. Track 2 is entitled “Alone” and reminds us of the extreme pathos and sadness of the early days of the pandemic, when we were all frightened and family members were taken from us without the support of their loved ones by their side in their isolated and lonely hospital rooms. But Track 2 is then complemented in a positive way by Track 4, “Hymn of Hope” that the composer specifically wrote to bring us all hope that better days would be ahead.

There are some pieces on the CD that demonstrate always welcomed pyrotechnics like “Permutations On a Theme by Paganini” based on the famous Paganini melody that so many other composers have used to create their own variations on that theme. Joseph purposely steers clear of the path most often followed however and decides to create a jazz/Classical fusion approach to this theme. Similarly, Joseph has never performed “Flight of the Bumblebee” because so many other musicians have chosen that piece as their warhorse concert piece. He therefore decided to write a loving but exciting parody of that iconic Rimsky-Korsakov selection for this CD and entitles it lovingly, “Homage & Offspring to the Bumblebee” but also facetiously subtitled it “Son of a Bee” exactly because of the intense pyrotechnics involved. You won’t be disappointed. Also, everyone knows the melody “Chopsticks” and Joseph creates a tour de force on this melody as well that he entitles “Fantasy On a Well-known Melody,” which takes the listener through a kaleidoscope of styles and moods. It starts off very Classically with a few technical but beautiful variations, then progresses into an intense tango where Piazzolla’s “Libertango” is tangentially referenced before heading into an intense jazz section complete with walking bass, and finally followed by a raucous big band jazz ending.

Additionally, there are some touch memorial pieces written for important people in Joseph’s life. “Remembering Ennio” was written at the sad passing of one of the greatest film composers of all time, Ennio Morricone. Joseph had learned so much from studying his music, and since Joseph had always aspired to becoming a film composer himself, it was important that he write this piece for Mr. Morricone. “Bossa Lacrimoso” was written for one of Joseph’s students who passed away suddenly and unexpectedly in 2022. He loved Latin music, so it was fitting that this piece commemorated their friendship. Finally, “We’ll Dance Again” was written in memory of Donna Dee Ray who passed also unexpectedly in 2021. Donna Dee was a digital accordion student of Joseph’s, but also a dear friend and ATG Board of Directors member while Joseph was president 2018 – 2020. Since Donna Dee and her husband Dennis Ray performed as a duo most of their lives, the title is dedicated to both of them.

But the composer’s favorite piece on this CD is his “Nine Children’s Pieces,” again for accordion orchestra in which Joseph is playing all the parts. This was originally written as a solo free bass piece for young players and is included in the ATG Syllabus. However, Joseph felt that the fully orchestrated version would really make this composition sparkle and come to life, which you will agree was a successful approach in this recording.

There are many more selections on this CD, almost 80 minutes of music that are very positive listening experiences. Similar to his Chameleon Vol 2 CD, he ends this CD with a composition from another chameleon-like musical personality, his teacher, Mickey Bisilia. It is an exciting and harmonically interesting novelette called “Speed Demon” and is a fitting end to this latest CD offering.

You can acquire the CD by writing to Joseph at janpressmusic@yahoo.com.

Shanghai Jazz is a jazz club/restaurant with an Oriental influence. The focus here is mainly on three things, namely, the food, music and lovely atmosphere. It serves excellent Asian varieties, the chefs also include seasonal menu with flavors and veggies as per the season; every dish is prepared with utmost care and served in huge portions. Shanghai Jazz also has a bar that features wines, beers and cool cocktails. As far as music is concerned, the restaurant hosts live music concerts sans any extra cover charge. You can also hire this establishment for private events and celebrations; off-site catering services are also offered. I have been there many times. The entertainment, food, and service is always consistently superior.

I have been to Shanghai Jazz many times over the years. It has a very comfortable and inviting atmosphere. The food is very delicious and reasonable. Parking is simple. The entertainment is superb, especially Eddie Monteiro. I highly recommend going there to see him perform!

No music charge, $25 food and drink minimum, performance begins at 7 - 9:30 PM. Reservations are strongly recommended.

ATAM logo
Peggy FalcettiThe Accordion Teachers Association of Massachusetts (ATAM) will sponsor one of their biggest events in years with over 1500 entries. This 3 day festival will take place March 31, April 1 & 2, 2023 at the “Boston Newton Marriott” in Newton, Massachusetts.

President Frankie Coelho, is happy to announce that the ATAM will recognize Joseph Natoli from Ohio, “Internationally Famous Accordionist”, Concert Artist, Educator, and Adjudicator. The award as “Honorary Lifetime Member” will be presented at the Saturday evening annual Awards Banquet. ATAM President Frankie Coelho shares, “This is a well-deserved honor!”

The Contest Co-Chairmen Michael Falcetti and President Frankie Coelho (Miguel School of Music), will be taking over for Chairman Peggy Falcetti after her 43 years tenure. The 3 day event includes music students from all of the New England states participating in accordion, bass guitar, drums, guitar, piano, violin, and voice categories. Students may compete in solo, duet, ensemble, battle of the bands, and orchestra categories.

There are over 800 entries in solo, duet, and band categories, which span all age groups and skill levels. Adult categories were introduced in 2019, and the 2020 pandemic was the catalyst for its new virtual competition, which is open to anyone, including those outside the New England area.

Over $5,000.00 in cash awards and scholarships will be given out. All events are free and open to the public. Both live and virtual categories will take place during the weekend.

The Battle of the Bands can always be counted on to showcase exceptional talent, and Sam Falcetti's New England Digital Accordion Orchestra, which usually closes the event, is sure to be quite entertaining. There also will be workshops, a vendor station, and a Saturday night banquet, where all New England Cup categories will be awarded. 2023's Festival co-chairs are Michael Falcetti and Frankie Coelho (Miguel School of Music).

Our First Accordion Lesson!

by Rita Davidson Barnea, Editor USA Accordion News
Jane CJane C.Many events in our lives are pivotal and affect us forever.. One such moment, for me and many others, was our first accordion lesson! Do you remember yours? How did your first lesson and your accordion teacher influence your life? Please share this moment with our readers. Please send me your thoughts and feelings etc. about your first accordion lesson, your teacher, and how it enhanced your life. Jane Christison, well known accordionist, shares her thoughts:

"February 22nd is the anniversary of my very first accordion lesson. When the man came to our house to give me a free musical test, my Mom told me, years later, that she knew by the look on my face when he opened the case and I saw the accordion, that it was something I had to do. I am so thankful that my parents made the time to take me to lessons and accordion band practices, and to somehow pay for new accordions as needed.

And I often think about all the many people who are in my life because of the accordion like Joan C. Sommers, my UMKC Accordion family, and of the many places I have been lucky enough to travel to because of playing the accordion. And all because of a random phone call asking my Mom, "Would you like to give your child a free musical test?" I can't imagine what my life would have been like without the accordion. Thanks, Mom and Dad! “

You can read more about Jane in this article:
http://www.accordionusa.com/?d=01-Dec-2022&lang=en#art5042

Read about Joseph Natoli’s accordion teacher, Mickey Basilia, in this months publication.

I remember my first accordion lesson. It happened on June 6th. Having shown an aptitude for music, (When I was 4 years old, I filled glasses with varying levels of water and played tunes). My parents, being European Holocaust survivors, and living in a small house, decided on the accordion. I do not remember asking for it. My mother just took me to Major Music in Irvington, New Jersey, first to Anthony Listopad and then after a short time, I studied with Eugene Ettore. Every year, on June 6, I think of the importance of that date and of my parents wise decision. And, the rest, as is said, is history.

You are invited to submit your story on your first accordion lesson. Photos are welcome. We are interested! Send to: Ritabelll@aol.com

2023 Updated and Expanded: Three Diverse Solos by Three Very Different Composers: Carlos Surinach, Robert Russell Bennett, Henry Cowell

by Dr. Robert Young McMahan Chair, AAA Composers Commissioning Committee
AAA Header
For the 2000 AAA Festival Journal I wrote an article on the accordion works of three of five world-acclaimed composers who were all commissioned in 1959: Barcelonian-born Carlos Surinach, and two prominent American composers, Robert Russell Bennett, celebrated for his brilliant orchestrations of world-famous Broadway musicals, and Henry Cowell, noted for his avant-garde, highly experimental music in his younger years but by 1959, a much “tamer” composer.

(The AAA contributions of the remaining two of the five composers, Virgil Thomson and William Grant Still, are discussed in different issues of the Festival Journal.)

Surinach’s piece, Pavana and Rondo, is reflective of his Spanish heritage and very well crafted and entertaining. Bennett’s Four Nocturnes is an unlikely combination of Romantic era tonality and glitzy Broadway, jazzy style, that somehow works and is fun to play or hear. Finally, Cowell’s Iridescent Rondo is what the title states, a form with returning themes, but with a rather surprising middle section in the style of an Irish jig (part of this very eccentric composer’s family ancestry).

All three pieces are quite entertaining with a certain amount of wry musical humor. Performances of all three may be heard on the AAA website commissioned works home page, http://www.ameraccord.com/aaacommissions.php, and the 2023 updated and expanded article may be read at: http://www.ameraccord.com/aaacommissions12.php

Update on Michael Bridge

by Rita Davidson Barnea, Editor USA Accordion News
Michael Bridge
Michael BridgeMichael BridgeVideo: “Oblivion” orchestrated by Michael Bridge

Michael Bridge is always busy with new musical projects, always entertaining, educational, and thinking outside the box! You might say that his musical career is a “Bridge” that very successfully connects all genres of music via the accordion. He truly lives up to his name!

Michael shares, “I recently recorded the “Italian Concerto” in the hall named after Glenn Gould, whose recording of this piece captivated me as a teenager. It was a very meaningful day because this completes my Rebanks Fellowship (which acted for me like a “post-doc”), and therefore marks my final act as a ‘student.’ My next solo album of “Mediterranean music,” both old and contemporary, will come out in fall 2023.”

Announcing the Toronto premiere of Tangorium on May 13, 2023: “We’re delighted to share the stage with the Greater Toronto Philharmonic (@thegtpo) to perform our tango-fusion show at the Glenn Gould Studio in downtown Toronto, Canada. Get your tickets soon via the Greater Toronto Philharmonic website, this one will sell out.”

Also, do not miss Michael’s new video: “Oblivion” orchestrated by Michael Bridge: “I invite you to meditate with me on Piazzolla's “Oblivion”, in my new orchestration for solo *digital accordion. I played this with a little more dissonance and a little less 'light' than the norm. But after all, the title is Oblivion. It's a serious but beautiful piece.Thank you(!) to the Rebanks Fellowship @ the Glenn Gould School which enabled me to film these videos.”

Michael Bridge is a virtuoso performer on both the acoustic accordion and the digital accordion. Michael’s concerts capture the energy and panache of stadium rock with the elegance and discipline of chamber music. He was named one of CBC’s 30 under 30 classical musicians.

Michael Bridge is a musical maverick. He’s a virtuoso performer on both the acoustic accordion and its 21st Century cousin, the digital accordion. His concerts capture the energy and panache of stadium rock with the elegance and discipline of chamber music. He has won numerous competitions in Canada and abroad and was named one of CBC’s 30 under 30 classical musicians.

Michael recently received a doctorate in performance from the University of Toronto and became a Rebanks Fellow at the Glenn Gould School. He gives over 100 concerts a year as a soloist and as a member of both the “Bridge & Wolak” duo and “Ladom Ensemble”. He’s in huge demand for masterclasses around the world.

Bridge embraces a musical aesthetic that is alternatively irreverent, deadly serious, meticulously prepared and completely in-the-moment. He’s at home with jazz, folk and classical music and has premiered 53 new works. Ultimately, he aims to make your world more bearable, beautiful and human – even if only for the length of a concert. www.MichaelBridge.ca

Michael will perform for the Alabama Accordion Association on June 17, 2023. For more information: csfunder@gmail.com

Mickey Bisilia, Important Teacher, Musician, Accordionist and More!

by Joseph Natoli
Mickey BasiliaVideo: "Speed Demon". A novelette composed in the 1970's by Mickey Bisilia, performed by Joseph Natoli.
Download the pdf music file kindly donated by Joseph Natoli at: Speed Demon

Since March 19, 2023 would have been Mickey Bisilia’s 105th birthday, and it is also my namesake day of St. Joseph in the Catholic religion, I was asked to write this article for this month’s edition of AccordionUSA.com which I am happy to do. So who was Mickey Bisilia you say? Well, that’s exactly why I am writing this article, because Mickey didn’t receive a lot of fame or attention in his life musically, but he was such an important teacher, musician, arranger, composer, and accordionist that many people should know his name and his accomplishments. In that context, I thought I would honor him by posting his bio, one of his own articles from 1957, and an original piece of his called "Speed Demon" which is a really charming and attractive novelette piece he wrote back in the 1970s. Mickey wrote many of those types of pieces which are for sale on my website (inquiries at janpressmusic@yahoo.com).

There is a wonderful quote from the German writer Berthold Auerbach. He said "Music washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life."

I thought, no quote could be more appropriate when remembering Mickey Bisilia, because music was his entire life. In fact, it was so important to him, that it sustained him throughout many years of poor health. Many times we came close to losing Mickey during his multiplied illnesses, yet each and every time he would return to his music after a bout of illness, and he would bounce back to life almost miraculously. Music was to Mickey like water to a dying plant. It washed away the dust and the worries of his everyday life. With each and every health crisis, it was the one thing that rejuvenated him, kept him fighting, and kept him alive.

However, even though music sustained Mickey's life, he was also able to use music as a tool to nurture and touch the lives of each and every one of his students. For he was one of those rare selfless teachers who taught for the sheer joy of watching a student grow and blossom into something special. Mickey would often write spectacular arrangements and compositions for his students, that any studio arranger would charge hundreds or thousands of dollars for, yet these things were always included in the cost of a lesson. In fact, it is a miracle to me that in this day and age when the value of anything is inevitably reduced to dollars and cents, Mickey was always using a different kind of calculator. His calculator had no number keys at all. You see, his calculator keys contained words like "dedication", "selflessness", "excellence", "respect", and "hard work", all multiplied by the "love" key, producing the final output of many many enriched lives.

Mind you, Mickey was a "what you see is what you get kind of guy,” and he could sometimes become pretty acerbic if he knew you were getting lazy and not putting in the same time and dedication towards the relationship that he had. If you hadn't practiced a particular week, he would often invite you to go home, take your money with you, and ask you not to come back until you were serious about making some progress. But I know I can speak for all his students that no offense was ever taken. We may have been embarrassed that he exposed us, but once you were "busted" by Mickey, it made you want to go home and never disappoint him again. Because we all knew that these antics were his attempts at polishing his stones into brilliant diamonds.

But remember, even though I speak about the importance of music in Mickey's life and in the lives of those he touched, he taught us all even more meaningful values that extend into our everyday lives and have become a critical and integral part of who we are as human beings. Mickey taught us all the ideas of selflessness, the pursuit of excellence, cherishing the important things in life, but most importantly, the refusal to fail and the refusal to give up.

Mickey was like that special uncle or grandparent who always understood, never criticized me, and always supported everything and anything I did. And he always, always believed in me. He was my teacher, my mentor, my friend, and my 2nd father. His actions made me understand how much he respected and loved me unconditionally, and I hope he realized how much of those same feelings I felt for him.

National Accordion Association’s 2023 Convention Is Now History

by Sharon Seaton, Ed.D.
NAA header
NAA children bandConventioneers enjoyed the return of the NAA’s annual convention in 2022 and 2023 after the compulsory shutdown by the pandemic. It was good to see friends again, and folks were ready to learn, to play, and party a little bit. After a busy day of Fun Band rehearsals and workshops, a baked potato/chili bar was served, followed by the Thursday evening concert, featuring conventioneers themselves.

Friday’s activities included more workshops and rehearsals, and then the highlight of the day: an evening with the Brave Combo and Alex Meixner and Cory Pesaturo (who presented five workshops) performing “high energy music.” The music was sizzling, and the dancers filled the floor all evening. We heard so many excited comments and demands that we bring this group back next year.

Saturday’s activities included an impressive luncheon concert by the Youth Band, conducted by Dick Albreski of Edmond, Oklahoma. Ten young accordionists performed as an ensemble and alternated as soloists.

The day’s activities culminated with a banquet featuring live dinner music. What instrument? Accordion, of course! And then the grand finale concert! Headliner performers who also presented workshops during the three-day convention starred in the show: Gordon Kohl, Dee Langley, Lori Brooke, Eddie Monteiro, Cory Pesaturo and Jim Rommel. It was a wonderful concert, whetting the appetites of those in the audience for next year’s musical experience!

Zisl Slepovitch and Ilya Shneyveys in House Concert

by Rita Davidson Barnea, Editor USA Accordion News
Zisl Slepovitch and Ilya Shneyveys

On March 30, 2023, 7:30 PM, Ilya Shneyveys and Zisl Slepovitch presented the world premiere performance of “Nigunim.Improv” a program on the beautiful Hasidic spiritual chants and songs, an improvisational take on Hasidic Nigunim. The E♭ and bass clarinets, tenor saxophone, ukulele, wind pipe, accordion and synthesizer, depending on the instrument, displayed rich tones of deep bellowing and "open arm" quality. Leslie and I were delighted to have the privilege to attend the house concert hosted at the home of Jenya and Sam Steingold in Midwood, Brooklyn. It was a wonderful, entertaining and educational evening.

Zisl’s friend, Staś Kmieć  shares, “Hypnotic, joyous, soulful, spirited, and at times, just "out there," Nigunim are a flow of rhythms, syncopation and musical thought, and are stylized in form and expression. These mystical Jewish songs, almost always sung without lyrics, originated in the Hasidic revival movement of the 18th century and often drew from local music patterns and traditions. Ecstatic dancing and singing of nigunim was a way for the Hasidim to enter “the chamber of God”.

The evening included their performance on varied instruments, explanations of the selections which truly enhanced the experience, and spirited dancing at times by some of the attendees. It truly was a warm and welcoming atmosphere and we learned so much about the nigunim. Zisl and Ilya created a modern angle of the music which can be appreciated by all who value world culture. Nigúnim is a plural form of "nígn, or niggún - in Sephardic pronunciation— Jewish religious spiritual chant, with or without lyrics, that emerged and developed in the Hasidic religious practice, but then took off in classical music, jazz, "world music" – whatever the latter means, and so on, while retaining its significant place in the spiritual practices. I recommend that you research Zisl Slepovitch and witness how greatly he has
contributed to preserving this music. We are all so fortunate that Zisl has devoted much of his life to not only preserving Yiddish music but also presenting it to the world in both its original form and in new arrangements.

D. Zisl Slepovitch, a native of Minsk, Belarus, is an ethnomusicologist (Ph.D.), klezmer, classical, and improvising woodwind and keyboard player; conductor, composer, educator, founding member of critically acclaimed bands Litvakus, Zisl Slepovitch Trio, and Zisl Slepovitch Ensemble. Excerpts from his website D. Zisl Slepovitch is the musician in residence at Fortunoff Video Archive for Holocaust Testimonies at Yale University. Slepovitch’s theatre, film, and television work includes multiple productions by National Yiddish Theatre Folksbiene, Fiddler on the Roof in Yiddish (off-Broadway), Rejoice (dubbed “Eternal Echoes” CD, Sony Classical) with Itzhak Perlman and Cantor Yitzchak Meir Helfgot (PBS, Sony Classical), Defiance movie, and many others. Dr. Slepovitch has taught Yiddish language and culture at The New School, has been a guest artist and visiting lecturer at many universities and cultural organizations worldwide.

Zisl Slepovitch (Dmitri Zisl Slepovitch) is an internationally renowned multiinstrumentalist (clarinetist, saxophonist, flutist, pianist, keyboardist, singer), conductor, composer, arranger, translator, and music and Yiddish educator. Zisl Slepovitch is Musician in residence at Yale University’s Fortunoff Video Archive for Holocaust Testimonies. He is the founder and artistic director of the Litvakus klezmer band, Zisl Slepovitch Trio, Zisl Slepovitch Ensemble, The Beary Brothers project, Assistant Music Director / Music Director / Music Coordinator, and woodwind player in many productions by the National Yiddish Theatre Folksbiene, including Fiddler on the Roof in Yiddish directed by Joel Grey (off-Broadway).

Zisl has served as educator and artist in residence at BIMA at Brandeis University, guest artist at University of Michigan, Indiana University, and Amherst College and Vassar College, a teaching fellow and performing artist at YIVO Institute for Jewish Research (New York City), Vienna Klezmer Workshop (Vienna), The Moscow Sefer Center, and Eshkolot Project (both in Moscow).

With close to 20 years of experience in Yiddish music, Ilya Shneyveys is considered a master of the traditional klezmer accordion style, and a renowned interpreter of the music on many instruments (including guitar, bass, percussion, flutes and others). Excerpts from his website: He creates original arrangements of traditional melodies, and composes contemporary pieces in the style, some of which have already become part of the modern-day klezmer repertoire. In his solo project, traditional instruments and sounds are combined with contemporary electronic music in a surprisingly compelling fusion. Among his many creative sides, Ilya is a sought-after improviser, conductor, accompanist and band leader.

A founding member of Berlin’s Neukölln Klezmer Sessions and the Shtetl Berlin festival, as well as a long-time faculty member at Yiddish Summer Weimar, Ilya regularly performs and teaches at major Jewish festivals around the world, including Yiddish Fest Moscow, Yiddish New York, Klezfest St.Petersburg, Klezfest London, KlezKanada, Montreal Jewish Festival, Toronto Ashkenaz Festival, Seattle Yiddish Fest, Krakow Jewish Festival and more.

Ilya is the artistic director and a founding member of the Yiddish psychedelic rock band Forshpil (Latvia), and a founding member of the Yiddish-Bavarian fusion project Alpen Klezmer (Germany), the winner of 2014 RUTH World Music Award at TFF Rudolstadt. In 2017-2021 he was the artistic director of the German-Israeli student exchange project The Caravan Orchestra, for which he was awarded the 2017 Shimon-Peres-Prize. As a touring member of the klezmer-balkan band Dobranotch (Russia) he received the Eiserne Eversteiner Preis in 2017. Among his other notable projects are the KaraYam Ensemble (exploration of the Yiddish-Greek-Turkish music connections) and the Black Rooster Band (resurrecting lost Jewish music from Latvian archives). He has performed and collaborated with The Klezmatics (USA), Daniel Kahn and the Painted Bird (Germany) and many others. Originally from Riga, Latvia, Ilya has traveled the world promoting Yiddish music and culture. He is currently a sought-after concert and simkha musician based in Brooklyn, NY, where he organizes community klezmer jam sessions and picnics, spreading the joy of klezmer.

Video 2: La Valse a Margaux performed by Vladimir Mollov.
Video 3: To Life from Fiddler on the Roof, performed by Vladimir Mollov & Annie Mollova.
Elitsa Mollova and Vladimir MollovWMAS logoThe guest-artist concert at the March meeting of the Washington Metropolitan Accordion Society (WMAS) in Falls Church, Virginia, left the audience of more than fifty people begging for more. WMAS Secretary / Treasurer / Webmaster Mara Cherkasky summarized it well in an email to club members: “We ushered in the season yesterday with an absolutely beautiful concert by accordionist Vladimir Mollov, joined for the second half by his wife Annie Mollova on violin. Such chemistry between them!

Their daughter Elitsa also took part: she sang (in Bulgarian), to her dad’s accompaniment, a piece composed and popularized by his uncle, a famous Bulgarian singer. The Mollovs’ playlist ranged from the tango ‘Por Una Cabeza’ to Richard Galliano to Vladimir’s take on Bulgarian folk melodies to Serbian and Ukrainian folk tunes to Debussy to a gorgeous Swedish-style piece that Annie composed as a bridal processional — and more.”

Born in Bulgaria to a family of self-taught wedding musicians, Vladimir Mollov was inspired by the sounds of the accordion starting in early childhood. At the age of thirteen Vladimir participated in an accordion competition in Vladivostok, Russia, and placed fourth. Two years later he placed first in an international competition and received fourth place in the World Accordion Competition in Castelfidardo, Italy. Since then, Vladimir has been recognized at national and international accordion competitions including a first award recognition at the National Competition for Variety Music and Jazz on accordion in Novi Pazar, Bulgaria.

He played for four years with the renowned Duquesne University Tamburitzans and has been Guest Artist at the American Accordionists’ Association Festival and other venues. His repertoire includes classical, jazz, French musette, Eastern European folk music, as well as his own compositions.

Annie Mollova began learning the violin at age nine in Boulder, Colorado, where she studied both Scandinavian folk music and classical under Sharon Gillespie. She went on to work with Oswald Lehnert at the University of Colorado at Boulder. After successfully auditioning for the Duquesne University Tamburitzans, she trained with Charles Stegeman, and for two years, toured the United States with the Tamburitzans, performing on violin, trumpet violin, acoustic guitar, alto recorder, brač, and vocals.

Annie completed her Bachelor’s degree in Music Performance summa cum laude in 2006 and received her Master’s degree in Performance from Duquesne University in 2008. She has performed with the Butler County Symphony Orchestra and Cuidado tango band, and is currently part of a violin/accordion duo with her husband, Vladimir, whom she met while both were performing with the Tamburitzans.

Thanks to Dan Grauman for the concert review, videos and pictures.

“Have Accordion -- Will Travel” with Dr. Scott Anderson

by Dr. Scott Anderson and Pamela Tom
D. Anderson
Dr. Scott AndersonDr. Scott Anderson, San Francisco Accordion Club Member and Strolling Accordion Ambassador, with Pamela Tom, updates and shares his experiences with his accordion in Manila. A great example of “Have Accordion, Will Travel.”

My family spent the 2022 holidays in Manila on behalf of Para Ti Global, a non-profit organization. My “travel accordion,” a dented 37 key, 96 bass Fisitalia, came along for the ride as it has for other Para Ti Global projects abroad. Our team delivered meals to 8,500 underprivileged youth in the Manila area, along with clothes, toys, and toothbrushes. Countless local volunteers made our events happen, day after day, as Para Ti Global visited various locations.

I was surprised when my accordion was described as a “traditional instrument of the Philippines,” when I was introduced at an early event. On another occasion an observer cheerfully asked where my “skirt” was. He thought I was playing bagpipes! Where was my kilt? Many of the people I encountered had not seen an accordion. As members of the San Francisco Accordion Club, we play a role as educators. People want to learn about accordions.

I performed on a basketball court, at a pizza parlor, in homes, at our hotel, and at a street party for New Year’s Eve. The latter event was a raucous scene in my wife’s childhood neighborhood. Bringing maracas along allowed me to invite others to participate, as volunteer percussionists.

My repertoire included: traditional Filipino songs; American Standards; Latin, Italian, and French favorites; the Beatles; and a couple light classical numbers. I also entertained with holiday favorites.

I thank my teacher, Maestro Lou Jacklich, for emphasizing “strolling” skills. No doubt, other accordionists across the U.S. could share similar accordion ambassador stories either in America or abroad. The accordion brings people together, no matter where they live.

Scott Anderson, MD (standerson@ucdavis.edu) is Medical Director of Para Ti Global Para Ti Global or "For You Global" is a 501(c)(3) private non-profit organization whose goal is to ensure that children everywhere, regardless of financial status, upbringing, background, or ethnicity have the opportunity to learn and grow. In doing so, we also hope to facilitate an end to poverty by uplifting the young minds of our generation through quality education, medical care, and nutrition.

APOThe Accordion Pops Orchestra, conducted by Al Terzo, presents their next concert on Saturday, May 20, 2023 at 5:PM in celebration of the 300th anniversary of the South Presbyterian Church. The address is 150 West Church Street, Bergenfield, NJ.

The orchestra's roots can be traced to 1970 when it was organized by the Accordion Teachers Association of New Jersey.  Its first conductor was  Dr. Jacob Neupauer of Philadelphia.  In  1980 the orchestra was reorganized under well-known accordionist and composer Eugene Ettore.
In 1985 the orchestra was again reorganized under Daniel Desiderio and the name was formally changed to the Accordion Pops Orchestra.  The membership was expanded beyond the original members from New Jersey to include performers from Pennsylvania, New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Delaware, Maryland, and Rhode Island. Maestro Desiderio retired in 2011 and turned the reins over to the current conductor, Al Terzo.

The orchestra consists entirely of accordions plus percussion instruments.  The accordions are divided into five main sections (first through fifth accordion), each playing different parts.  In addition, there is a bass accordion with special deep reeds and a midi accordion with electronic capabilities to simulate hundreds of other instruments.
The roughly 30 members include professionals, teachers, and amateur musicians.  The orchestra performs a repertoire taken from a wide range of music categories, including Broadway, popular music, movie themes, and light classical compositions.  The orchestra performs in concert halls, festivals, playhouses, clubs, churches, and retirement homes.

Conductor Al Terzo is a music teacher, arranger, and conductor.  He has been a member of the orchestra since its inception in 1970. Dr. William Schimmel’s 2023 Seminars

by Rita Davidson Barnea, Editor USA Accordion News
Dr. William SchimmelThe 2023 Accordion Seminars will be curated by Dr. William Schimmel. It is their 29th smash year sponsored by the Accordion Global Association. - AGA. Dr. Schimmel shares, “We go in a global direction - a global synthesis in a single instrument anywhere or anyplace. Welcome to the ominous side of the accordion - shadowed - mysterious - intimate - subdued - gorgeous - in the background - highlighting - classical - - out front and center - and also can be: (like new york) too surreal to love, but ….. What about the baroque aspect - or baroqueness - finding oneself in the fertile reality of some really bon merde. There is so much to explore - and even more!”
There is so much to digest - and to jest!
There is …….. yes, the built in ironic duality as Dr. Schimmel states: “Hip/square, beautiful/ugly, elegant/vulgar, old/new, classy/ain’t got no class” - never one without the other and two new ones - “terribly sad/ wonderfully hilarious” Tune into the seminars this year - with accordion philosopher, Dr. William Schimmel - and the seminar team. We will give you some really cool presentations and some wonderful hot new pieces - all premiers and some remakes - they will be great fun and make for some really good discussions

“We”ll explore the visual arts, dance, video, music theatre and concept art in the midst of this - what is the goal? as always, content on the highest level
And like the last three years - they will be virtual, July 28 29 30 2023 - Master Class 3 to 4 - Concert 4 to 5. Links will be provided prior to each day.”

Dr William Schimmel has recently appeared with Sound Icon in Boston's Institute of Contemporary Art. Sound Icon is a group devoted to innovative new compositions. The composition was “Hyena”, composed by the Viennese Composer, Gerg Friedrich Haas with text written and performed with his wife, Molina Williams. The text deals with the writers' dealing and recovering from addiction..The piece calls for a chamber orchestra which includes a large accordion part. The performance received a 15 minute standing ovation.

Haas is noted for a genre called  "Spectral Music". Much of the writing explores extended techniques and performing in microtones giving the ensemble an electronic effect. Haas and Williams both teach at Columbia University. Haas received international fame with his 70 minute work, “In Vain”. Much of the work is performed in total darkness and can be seen and heard on Youtube. Again, the work has a large accordion part, performed by Schimmel. A major performance took place in 2010 at New York's Park Avenue Armory to an audience of a thousand plus people.

Dr. Schimmel can be seen and heard in the following new films:
“The Good Fight” - Honoring Eric Bentley - “The Quantum Leap”, “Halmoni's Pot”, and “Atemis and the Astronaut” - “Hyena” (soon to be released)
