 I am happy to announce that the November USA News is online on time despite having been without heat and power for the past three days due to a major blizzard on the East Coast! The USA News continues to fire up all accordion enthusiasts with the desire to attend future accordion events! With this issue, I begin my fourth year as USA News Editor. It has been an amazing and fascinating three years! I attended numerous concerts and festivals, interviewed people and informed everyone about both new and favorite accordion artists, CD's, and events, etc. The greatest benefit from doing all of these things is that I met so many wonderful, talented, and enthusiastic people who are now friends. Just attend accordion events, participate, and you will meet interesting people who will become your new friends! There is so much more happening now on the accordion scene! I was very fortunate to have the privilege of being invited to attend the 64th Annual Coupe Mondiale in Shanghai, China. Following bio by Carol (Spagnoli) Schiavi : Peter Spagnoli was born on November 1, 1921 in Borgo Val di Taro, a little town, nestled in a picturesque valley in the Apennine Mountains of northern Italy. Peter was the second son born to Emilio and Ernesta (Dellapina) Spagnoli. (The Dellapina family was better known by their nickname, “il Gein”). Two years later, in 1923, Emilio, Ernesta and their two sons, Aldo and Peter, crossed the Atlantic and landed in the “promised land”, the USA. After passing through Ellis Island, the Spagnoli family made their new home in New York City, a far cry from the quiet countryside of the Borgo. They found an apartment on 60th Street, overlooking the 59th Street Bridge on the east side of Manhattan. It was there that Peter would later enter his destiny as a professional musician and devotee of Valtaro music. When Peter was 10 years old, a family friend, John Brugnoli, came to live with them. John was affectionately known as Scud'lien. Scud'lien, an accordionist and composer from Borgo Val di Taro, offered to teach Peter the accordion in exchange for room and board. Peter took to it like a duck takes to water, so his parents bought him his first accordion -- a secondhand one that cost about $25. Scud’lein taught him to read music and to play by ear. Most of the music Peter learned were folk songs from the Valtaro region, but many of these tunes were not written down. He learned by hearing them sung, listening with a keen ear, and then by playing them with his teacher. Early on in his music career, another friend of the family, Johnny Valentini, took Peter to play the accordion for the military at Governor’s Island. This was Peter’s first gig. For some reason, Johnny bought him a Spanish costume to wear and even though Peter only knew two songs, it didn’t seem to matter. It wasn’t long before Peter had a bigger repertoire and was using his musical skills to earn a little spending money. For $3 Pete would play all night at a local bar, the “Emiliana,” and also at some little “holes in the wall”, as he puts it. Peter continued his music lessons for four years in the accordion studios of Pietro Diero. There he honed his musical skills, as he received instruction in accordion technique and classical training. In 1936, Scud’lein and Pete DelGrosso, also known as “Filumena”, opened up “The Valtaro”, a cabaret on Second Avenue and 46th Street. It soon became popular for the dance music of their home town. Scud’lein and Filumena were the standard duo, but Peter and other accordionists, like Emilio Chiesa, played there as well. The unique sound of the Valtaro music was created by having two accordions playing a duet – one the melody, the other the harmony. The waltzes, mazurkas, and two steps from the Valtaro region were the main stay of their repertoire. Eventually, Peter would play at “The Terrace”, a cabaret that his father, Emilio, and Scud’lein bought in 1939. It was located uptown on Second Avenue and 59th Street. The Terrace came with two “in-house” and excellent musicians, a pianist, Norma McFeeters, a black woman from the West Indies, and a drummer, Willy Wohlman who was Jewish. Before long, the two of them were playing Valtaro as if it was part of their own DNA. Together with accordionists Mindy Cere, Scud’lein and Peter, on occasion, they became a tight knit band and The Terrace became a stomping ground for Valtaro aficionados. The place also became a local employment center and marriage bureau. Many “paesans” came together to enjoy the music and dancing and some had the extra bonus of meeting their future spouse. In 1943, during World War II, Peter joined the Air Force. For the next three years he put away his accordion and became a navigator for the B24 bomber and later the B29. He returned to civilian life in 1946 and went right back to playing at The Terrace on a steady basis. It was during this time that he in fact, met his own girl of his dreams, Dilma Viotti. They tied the knot on Easter Sunday, 1948. Peter desired to impart his ability and knowledge of the instrument so characteristic of the folk and romantic sound of the music of Europe. He became a teacher at the Elsie Bennett Accordion Studio in Brooklyn. He taught there for several years until he opened up a studio of his own. Through word of mouth and because of his good reputation, Peter amassed quite a number of accordion students. Peter continued playing at The Terrace, with Norma at the piano, until the 1960’s. During this time he expanded his repertoire to a more diverse and international flavor. Other bandleaders would ask him to play gigs like weddings. At these affairs he was able to meet and share the bandstand with other excellent musicians. Peter’s reputation preceded him and was well deserved. His musicianship and flare for knowing how to stir a crowd resulted in his becoming a well known and popular bandleader, providing music for weddings, formal affairs, political dinners and even Bar Mitzvahs and Communions. Some of his clientele included people such as Metropolitan Opera singers, political figures, actors and clergy. His talent indisputable, whether performing solo or with a ten piece band, Peter played music of all kinds -- from big band, Latin, pop, to rock n roll, but his signature style was the beloved Valtaro. That is what he was best known for. That is where he came from. Many of Peter’s accordion students caught his love for Valtaro, thus passing it on to the next generation. One such student, Dominic Karcic, a gifted accordionist and bandleader, is dedicated to keeping the music of Valtaro alive and thriving. During his career, Peter recorded two long playing records with his respected teacher, Scud’lein, featuring folk songs of Valtaro. “Balliamo e Cantiamo Con Valtaro”: Cantano I Due Menestrelli (Fiesta Records FLPS 1542) and an instrumental, “Valtaro Musette: Popular Italian Favorites (Fiesta Records FLPS 1515).Peter has been recognized for his excellence and years of service in the field of music. In 1994 he received the “Man of the Year” Award by the Valtarese Foundation. Peter was also honored by the Committee of Berceto Foundation and Xaverian Missionary Fathers, Il Comune di Borgo Val di Taro, and The American Accordionists’ Association, to mention a few. After an illustrious career of over 50 years, Peter officially retired in 1995 but did not put away his accordion for good. He made “guest appearances” at places like Magnanini Winery and other venues where Valtaro music is featured. His latest guest appearance was at his granddaughter’s wedding in June 2005. He opened the Valtaro set with what has come to be his grandchildren’s favorite, “Tutti Mi Chiamano Bionda”. Peter leaves his wife, Dilma of 63 years and two married daughters, four grandchildren and a recent great grand child. His musical legacy did not stop with him, but was passed on to one of his daughters and two grandchildren who have followed in his talented footsteps. The accordion world has lost a "giant".  We are very saddened by the unexpected passing on Friday, 21st October 2011 of jazz accordionist, Ken Olendorf. Ken, one of the finest Jazz accordionists in the country, was the conductor, pianist and contractor for the Bob Hope Show and the Donald O'Connor Show among other accomplishments. Ken was the first President of the Northwest Accordion Society and the founder of the Seattle Socials. Hs worked with the Ink Spots, Myron Floren, Clark Terry, The King Family, Bobby Vinton, Bobby Burgess and Cissy King, Ella Mae Morris, Rusty Draper, Norma Zimmer, Charlie Byrd, Cy Touf, The Harmonicats, Al Bolletto, Ike Cole, Woody Woodhouse, Mary Towne, Tiny Calkins, Norm Bobrow, Red Kelly, Art Doll, Corky Corcoran, Fred Greenwell, Floyd Standifer, Reino Moisio, Denny Mahn, Connie Haines, and more. Born in Chicago, Ken moved to Seattle with wife Barbara to raise their family. Ken was a proud father of four and friend to thousands. HE WILL BE DEEPLY MISSED BY ALL. |

Mary Tokarski to Perform with Hamden Symphony Orchestraby Rita Barnea |
 Concert Accordionist, Mary Tokarski will be the featured soloist with the Hamden Symphony Orchestra at 3:00 p.m. on November 6, 2011 at the Hamden Middle School Auditorium, 2623 Dixwell Avenue, Hamden, CT – Vesna Mehinovic, Conducting. Mary will perform “Rhapsody for Accordion and Orchestra” by Gary Daverne, O.N.Z.M. from Auckland, New Zealand. Mary has recorded and performed this magnificent, lyrical music score several times with the composer conducting both the Auckland Symphony and the Moravian Symphony in the Czech Republic. Gary Daverne is New Zealand’s most prolific and successful composer who has become a great supporter and arranger of music for the accordion, although he does not play the accordion. His arrangements and compositions for accordion orchestras and solo accordion are used extensively around the world. Also included on the concert will be music by Wolf-Ferrari’s ; "Secret of Suzanne Overture", selected arias from Mozart’s "Don Giovanni" featuring Daniel Schlorff, bass, and Beethoven’s "Wellington's Victory". In October, Mary visited China to serve as a United States Delegate to the Confederation Internationale des Accordeonistes World Accordion Congress, and as a member of the International Jury Panel – an honor she has been selected to perform for the Coupe Mondiale (World Championship) events in Croatia (2010), New Zealand (2009) and Scotland (2008). Along with accordionists from around the world, Mary served as Principal of her section in the World Accordion Orchestra since its inception in the United States in 2007. Among her many awards, she was recently presented with the prestigious “Artist in Residence” position by the American Accordionists’ Association at a Lifetime Achievement Ceremony in New Jersey. Performing both nationally and internationally as a soloist, with Symphony Orchestras and string quartets, this year Mary has traveled extensively within the United States, and also to China for a 5 city tour with the Mantovani Orchestra. As a workshop presenter, Mary is sought-out by numerous associations for presentations on all aspects of music, performance, and Master Classes. For 20 years Mary served as Director of Music Education at Tokarski Music Center in North Haven, Connecticut, where she taught piano and accordion, as well as conducted the choral & ensemble programs, and supervised the pre-school programs. Mary currently teaches piano and accordion at her home in Northford, Connecticut. She also served for many years as a Music Educator in the North Haven Department of Education's Early Childhood Development Program at Green Acres Elementary School, is currently 2nd Vice President of the Accordionists and Teachers Guild, International (ATG) as well as on the Board of Directors with both The American Accordionists' Association (AAA) and the ATG which are the two national member organizations of the Confederation Internationale des Accordeonistes, (IMC-UNESCO). Walter captured the Connecticut State Championship Title in 1966, 1967 and 1968, and went on to be a contender for the United States Championship many times thereafter.  Accordionist Peter Soave will present the World Premiere of a new accordion concerto by Max Simoncic with the Stockton Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Peter Jaffe on Thursday, November 10, 2011 at 8:00 PM and Saturday, November 12, 2011 at 6:00 PM at the Atherton Auditorium, San Joaquin Delta College. "Meet the Maestro” pre-concert talks begin 45 minutes prior to each performance.Recognized worldwide as a foremost master of bandoneon and concert accordion, Peter Soave has established himself as the leading soloist of his generation. The hallmark of his performances is his unique combination of commanding stage presence and the excitement of his vibrant virtuosity. Of Italian descent, Peter Soave's earliest memories are of music played on an accordion. By age three, he was certain of his life's work. He began music studies at five, and quickly gravitated towards classical music. At sixteen, he entered international competitions and swept first place four times, confirming his reputation as a virtuoso of the highest order: Grand Prix in Neu Isenberg, West Germany; Klingenthal Wettbewerb in East Germany; Coupe Mondiale in Folkstone, England; and the Trophée Mondiale in Arrezano, Italy. In 1987, Peter Soave was the inaugural recipient of "Voce d'Oro," the international award honoring those who have given prominence to the accordion in the world of modern music. Deeply inspired by the music of Argentinean composer Astor Piazzolla, Mr. Soave's impassioned musicianship motivated him to include the characteristic bandoneon in his performances. Peter's engagements include performances as a soloist and with orchestras and chamber ensembles throughout North and South America, Asia, Middle East, Europe, and Russia. He has appeared with the San Francisco Symphony, the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, Detroit Symphony, Phoenix Symphony, Brooklyn Philharmonic, Zagreb Philharmonic, Windsor Symphony, Flint Symphony, San Salvador Philharmonic, Belgrade Philharmonic, Lubbock Symphony, Bellevue Philharmonic, Walla Walla Symphony, Orquesta Sinfónica de Puerto Rico, Williamsport Symphony, Orquesta Sinfónica Gran Mariscal de Ayacucho and The Zagreb Soloists. He collaborated with conductors such as James Levine, Neeme Jarvi, Thomas Wilkins, Robert Spano, Leone Mageira, Hermann Michael, Duilio Dobrin, and Guillermo Figueroa. For the only North America appearance in 1999 of the "Three Tenors," Soave performed as the featured bandoneonist. He has also appeared on ABC's "Good Morning America." In 2007, Peter premiered Astor Piazzolla's oratorio "El Pueblo Joven", written for symphony orchestra, voice recitative, soprano, bandoneon, choir, and percussion, with the Radio Romania Chamber Orchestra, Romania. Numerous compositions have been written for him by the Venezuela's foremost composer, Aldemaro Romero: "Piazzollana-Homage à Piazzolla" for bandoneon and full orchestra; "Suite de Castelfidardo" for bandoneon and string orchestra; "Soavecito" for accordion and string orchestra; and "Tango Furioso" for bandoneon and string quartet. Romero's "Five Paleontological Mysteries," for accordion and string quartet, received its American premiere in Detroit in February 2008 and its European premiere in Italy in July 2008. Peter's recordings include a solo album "Pride and Passion," "Five Tango Sensations" with The Rucner String Quartet, a double CD "Undertango 2," and "Peter Soave & Symphony Orchestra," featuring the music of Astor Piazzolla and Carmine Coppola. His recording awards include the Detroit Music Award for Best Classical Recording in 2001 and Best Classical Instrumentalist in 2003. Eager to harmonize nature and music, Peter founded the Peter Soave Music Academy in the Dolomite Mountains in Italy in 2010, welcoming music lovers to convene and share. Slovenian-born and Stockton-based, Max Simoncic has had compositions commissioned, performed, and recorded by orchestras and ensembles across the globe. As in past Symphony milestone years, he helps celebrate the anniversary with a magnificent premiere. World Premiere for Accordion and Piano by Dr. Robert Young McMahanby Rita Barnea |
 Dr.Robert Young McMahan will present the World Premiere of his new composition for accordion and piano, “Romp III” at the Greater Princeton Steinway Society on Sunday, November 13th, 3 PM. The concert takes place at Jacobs Music, 2540 Brunswick Pike, Lawrenceville, NJ. Admission $18 individual nonmembers, $10 full time students. Founded in 1989, the Greater Princton Society is dedicated to developing the talent of young piano students. Taiwan-born pianist Joanna Chao’s performances have been described by the New Britain Herald “stunning exhibition of virtuosity and style”. A strong advocate for new music, she is a member of the critically acclaimed Argento Chamber Ensemble. Robert Young McMahan is an award-winning composer, noted and recorded classical accordionist. The program will include works by Schӧnberg, Bach, Lerdahl, Bartok, McMahan (world premiere of a work for accordion and piano), Liang, and Liszt. Besides his numerous published articles, Dr. McMahan has been featured in articles by others in Keyboard Magazine, The Music Connoisseur, High Fidelity, Who’s Who in American Composers: Classical, and several other highly regarded publications "Romp I" was composed in 2005 for violin, accordion, and piano. It was premiered at the 2005 AAA Master Class and Concert Series, at the Tenri Institute, by violinist Ruotao Mao, pianist Tomoko Kanamaru, and the composer on accordion. Dr.Robert Young McMahan and Dr. Paul Cohen (Soprano Saxophone) presented the World Premier of Dr. McMahan's composition, "Romp II" at the Tenri Cultural Center. The premiere was held during the 17th Annual 2011 AAA Master Class and Workshop Series organized and hosted by AAA Board member, Dr. William Schimmel. The composition was very enthusiastically received by the audience. A native of Washington, DC, Robert McMahan began his musical career at age twelve when he became an accordion student of Louis Coppola. He later won many first place awards in the Amecian Accordionists' Association national competitions in classiscal and contemporary original music divisions in the 1960s. In addition, he earned his Doctor of Musical Arts degree in composition from the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University, where he studied with Robert Hall Lewis, Jean Eichelberger Ivey, and Stefan Grove. He also holds a master's degree in the Great Books program at St. John's College. He joined the music faculty of the College of New Jersey in 1991, where he is Professor of Music and coordinator of theory and composition studies and classical accordion. As a noted classical accordionist, he has tirelessly promoted the instrument in serious contemporary music across his entire career. Robert McMahan has recorded on the CRS and Orion labels and was accordionist for the Baltimore Symphony during his years of residence in that region. Presently, he is an officer of the Board of Governors of the American Accordionists' Association and is the chair of its Composers Commissioning Committee.  The 14th Annual NE Accordion Festival takes place on November 11 & 12, 2011 at the following venues:November 11: Firefighters Hall & Museum, 664-22nd Avenue Northeast, Minneapolis, MN November 12: Elsie's Restaurant and Bowling Center, 729 Marshall Street Northeast, Minneapolis, MN. The NE Accordion Festival had its beginning in 1997 when Dee Langley (MN) had her close friend, Joanna Arnold Darrow (NJ) coming for a visit to the Twin Cities. Dee really wanted the people of the Twin Cities to be able to hear Joanna Arnold perform and so she asked a few accordion friends to join them at an open party at a local restaurant. They all had a great time and decided to do it again. 2011 brings the 14th annual get-together. The accordion is alive and well (and blossoming) in Minneapolis/St. Paul! The goal of the NE Accordion Festival is to provide an event where everyone can come, play, attend workshops, participate in competitions, and meet new friends in all the instrument-family styles and disciplines. Mark Stillman Receives 2011 NEAF Lifetime Achievement Awardby Rita Barnea |
 Mark Stillman is the recipient of the 2011 NEAF Lifetime Achievement Award honoring him for his constant and positive impact within the free-reed community. On Friday, November 11, at 7 PM Mark will be presented with his award by Castle Accordion and Mill City Accordion Association.Accordionist Mark Stillman is a Minnesota-based musician who specializes in the folk music of many cultures, including Eastern European (Bulgarian, Rumanian, Hungarian, Serbian, Macedonian and Czech), Greek, Celtic, French and Italian, in addition to Klezmer and Russian music. A classically-trained percussionist, he is a self taught accordionist who learned much of his repertoire in his travels through Eastern Europe. he has been a featured soloist with the Minnesota Orchestra, Minneapolis Pops Orchestra, Milwaukee Symphony, Minnesota Sinfonia, the Dallas Brass and on Prairie Home Companion. He has also performed for the recordings of the multi-ethnic rock group Boiled in Lead. He frequently performs with vocalist, Francine Roche. As a result of his reputation as specialist in ethnic music, he was asked to be a guest soloist with the Minnesota Orchestra, St. Paul Chamber Orhcestra, the Milwaukee Symphony and many other groups. Mark’s music often helps create the proper mood at art openings such as the Chagall and Monet exhibitions at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts. Mark has also asked to create an international flavor by performing at receptions for former Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Presidemt George W. Bush, former First Lady Hillary Clinton,and for Cirque du Soleil. He was also featured in beer commercials that aired during the Super Bowl a few years ago. Mark's band,"Klezmer and All That Jazz" will perform at a reception for Tom Brokaw at Wesminster Presbytrian Church in downtown Minneapolis on Tuesday November 8th. Earlier this year they did a similar reception for David Brooks. Mark will play for the Minneapolis College of Art and Design's Art Sale on Friday November 18th. He is also a regular strolling accordionist at the Gasthof restaurant in Northeast Minneapolis, as well as numerous Italian and French restaurants in the Twin Cities, playing regularly for the Minnesota Vikings, as part of the pre-game music at the Metrodome in Minneapolis.  Max Simoncic has composed a new accordion concerto which will have its world premiere given by Peter Soave with the Stockton Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Peter Jaffe on Thursday, November 10, 2011 at 8:00 PM and Saturday, November 12, 2011 at 6:00 PM at the Atherton Auditorium, San Joaquin Delta College. See article about Peter Soave in this issue.Max is an adjunct professor for National University, formerly professor of music at San Joaquin Delta College. He has received commissions from the Stockton Symphony, San Francisco Symphony Bay Brass, San Francisco Saxophone Quartet, St. John's Chamber Orchestra, Adelphi Chamber Orchestra of New Jersey, The Flexible Symphony of New York City and numerous other ensembles. Simoncic composed chamber music for “New Release Alliance” a composers group based in San Francisco for over a decade. In 2005, he won the ERM Media national competition “Masterworks of the New Era” for his orchestral composition “Petit Cirque” which received its premiere performance and recording with the Kiev Philharmonic in the Ukraine. Maestro Robert Ian Winstin described “Petit Cirque” as a “fun work, like a bizarre, over-the-top circus feel to it, sounds flying everywhere.” The CD was released in 2005. “Petit Cirque” has also been performed by the Cleveland Chamber Symphony and at the Louvre in Paris, France by the Paris and New Millennium Symphony orchestras the VOS orchestra, and the Norwalk Youth Orchestra. Simoncic’s “Concerto for Accordion, String Orchestra and Percussion" celebrates the 85th anniversary of the Stockton Symphony Orchestra. Simoncic also has had the pleasure of collaborating with Maestro Jaffe writing works for the Stockton Symphonies 70th, 75th, 80th anniversaries. He has written several other works for the Stockton Symphony dating back to 1970. The music of Max Simoncic has been performed throughout the USA and Europe. Some of the more recent performances include; “Four tango's for seven accordions, violin, cello and contra bass” played by the Flexible Orchestra of New York, “Concerto for Guitar and Orchestra” performed by the Adelphi Chamber Orchestra in New Jersey, “Concerto for Marimba, Piano and Symphonic Band”, premiered at Carnegie Hall in New York, “A Short Symphony and Violin Concerto” premiered by the St. John's Chamber Orchestra, “Fanfare for Wind Ensemble” performed at Carnegie Hall, and “Fanfare and March” for the Lodi Community Band. Composition has been a part of Simoncic's life for a much longer period of time than teaching. He began composing for the accordion at the age of 8 and composed his first orchestral piece at 12. "Max has a real imaginational gift," Stockton Symphony conductor Peter Jaffe said. "The actual spark of just having great musical ideas, that cannot be taught. | The Coupe Mondiale Video Archive and Education Project featuring free downloads of the performances by the 1st, 2nd and 3rd prize winners of each Coupe Mondiale category is now online. These free downloads are for the educational benefit of accordion teachers and students. The purpose is to enable the free spread of knowledge and information and through that, to help raise the level of accordion performance and musicianship internationally. Additionally, a video of all the Coupe Mondiale categories and their contestants is being kept in the CIA archives in Finland, which over the coming years will become a wealth of historical recordings. This project, initiated by the Confédération Internationale des Accordéonistes (CIA) with assistance from sponsor Pigini Accordions and Accordions Worldwide, is thanked by the CIA President Raymond Bodell, for their assistance. |

| The Columbus Day Parade held on Monday 10th October has been organized by the Columbus Citizens Foundation in New York since 1929. Over 35,000 people participate in the Columbus Day Parade each year, including over 100 groups, with bands, floats and contingents. The parade attracts nearly one million spectators and is the largest celebration of Italian-American culture in the world. This year, the profile the accordion enjoyed was excellent. At the finale of the parade, well known accordionist, Cory Pesaturo joined the hosts Maria Bartiromo and Joe Piscopo, the Grand Marshal Joe Plumeri, and 2011 American Idol Singer Pia Toscano on the red carpet performing Frank Sinatra's classic hit “New York, New York”. The performance was broadcast on TV and Cory was also interviewed from the broadcast booth making a very nice promotion for the accordion.  Donna Maria Regis was honored by becoming the first female soloist to concertize at A World of Accordions Museum/Harrington ARTS Center in Superior, WI. Her October 2, 2011 performance won standing ovations and garnered TV coverage by ABC, NBC, and Fox. The ABC and NBC evening newscasts aired video clips from the actual concert. Donna Maria’s appearance in Superior was part of a recent concert tour in which she paid musical tribute to several composers/arrangers for the accordion, among them Aldo DeRossi (her late cousin), Tony Lovello, Charles Magnante, and Frank Ricchio. Not only did Regis perform DeRossi’s music at the museum, she also presented significant archival materials – recordings, unpublished manuscripts, sheet music, etc. – to augment the existing DeRossi exhibit. Helmi Strahl Harrington, Ph.D. was delighted to accept these important contributions to the museum’s collection. Friendly audiences and standing ovations greeted Donna Maria Regis throughout her tour, which added 3619 miles to her car’s odometer and included additional concerts in Green Bay and Union Grove [WI] as well as Cloquet, Minnesota. Donna Maria Regis is the co-founder with Suzanne Welch of the popular ACCORDIONS NOW! Festival held in New Hampshire every August.  At a recent monthly meeting of the Washington Metropolitan Accordion Society (WMAS) in Falls Church, Virginia, two club members discussed the possibility of mounting an iPAD loaded with over 1,000 pages of music directly onto an accordion without harming the frame. Both members, Richard (Dick) Dangel and ClaMounte (Clay) Bobrowski, just happen to be engineers. Much thought was given to music readability, ergonomics, non-destructive mountability and aesthetics of the device. Dick, who first thought of this innovation, scanned over 1,000 pages of sheet music into his iPAD. He used basic Adobe software to annotate the music. There are other software programs that can add page turning and scrolling capabilities. A crude mock-up made from a coat hanger and cardboard evolved from this first discussion. This was followed by a prototype, and finally a finished product designed by Clay. The design used Velcro for the non-destructive mounting of the two-pound assembly. The iPAD is mounted to the treble side of the accordion body, tilted back from the normal vertical at a 55 degree angle and extends outward to the right of the grille. This particular combination of angle and position turns out to be very comfortable for viewing the music. The device was first shown to the WMAS members at the October meeting, where it was received with great enthusiasm. Members wanted to know where one of these devices could be purchased.  Accordionist Dee Langley of Minnesota has released her latest CD, "From the Edge of the Prairie" which is a new CD of original music inspired by not only her pioneer ancestors but also more recent additions to the cultural richness of Minneapolis.Dee said, "The songs included in this album celebrate the lives of people who have come from the farthest corners of the earth to live together and make a new life. It represents the blending of old and new, preserving and creating the heritage and gifts of the pioneering spirit still vibrant today." Dee specializes in both solo and ensemble works on the accordion with a focus on Balkan and classical music. of Polish, Celtic, German, Scandinavian, Balkan and Middle Eastern cultures blend with Dee's American heritage in this new CD creating living folk music with the accordion as tis driving force. Dee Langley is a recipient of the 2011-2012 McKnight Fellowship for Performing Musicians. Dee is also an invited Artist of the USA Projects, another prestigious award. What is USA Projects? On several occasions, Dee has been asked to perform accordion works not only with the Minnesota Orchestra and St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, but also the Bloomington Symphony Orchestra, Philomusica, The St. Cloud Symphony Orchestra and the Northwoods Classical Players (members of the Chicago Symphony).  On November 6th, Delaware Valley accordionists, the Acme Accordion School, and residents of Haddon Township will celebrate the accordion in an event called:"THE VAST VERSATILITY OF THE ACCORDION" to be held at Acme Accordion School & Musikgarten, 322 Haddon Ave., Westmont, NJ.Enjoy a day of music that varies from Classical – Baroque –Jazz – Show music –Ethnic-Pop – Contemporary, Romantic and more including: 10:30 AM: The festival will begin informally with various soloists performing music from the many different genres, which the accordion can perform. 12: PM: Assembly for the NATIONAL ACCORDION MONTH PHOTOGRAPH begins. 12:30 PM Photograph will be taken. Mr. Gardzalla served as principal organist of the Cathedral of St. Peter in Scranton, Pennsylvania and currently teaches music for the Wyoming Valley West school district. He is active as a concert organist and accordionist as well as assistant conductor of the Wyoming Valley Band, in which he is also principal trombonist Andre Fry, of Maryland, has achieved recognition in national competitions including first-place honors in the 2011 American Accordionists Association U.S. Virtuoso Championship, 2011 Elsie Bennett Composition Competition and 2010 Roland U.S. V-Accordion Festival Junior Division. Andre is a student of Ron Onda and Stas Venglevski. Throughout the day from 10:00 AM till 3:00 PM, there will be performances as well as an accordion market where anyone who may display an instrument for the accordion mart. Presenters of the workshops/concert are Jamie Maschler and Murl Allen Sanders.These workshops are for all levels of accordionists from beginners to advanced.
