Joe Soprani to Perform with Mandolin and Balalaika Ensemblesby Rita Barnea |
Accordionist Joseph Soprani will perform with the Munier Mandolin Ensemble and the Russian Balalaika Orchestra Sunday, Sept. 20 2015 at the Venice Island Performance Art Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Multicultural Arts Exchange presents the Munier Mandolin and Guitar Orchestra and Smithsonian Folkways Artists, the Kovriga Balalaika Orchestra with nationally acclaimed Accordian virtuoso Joseph Soprani, at the Venice Island Performing Arts Center in Philadelphia, Pa. For more than half a century, the Munier Mandolin and Guitar Orchestra has promoted classical mandolin music in the City of Brotherly Love. The Munier Orchestra was established in 1957, when two smaller ensembles - one from South Philly and one from Northeast Philly - united under the baton of Dr. Joseph Tiracchia. Tiracchia had a direct link with the Golden Age of the classical mandolin. His father was a student and personal acquaintance of the two foremost mandolin virtuosos and composers of that era: Raffaele Calace and Carlo Munier, for whom the orchestra is named. For more than three decades, the Munier Orchestra flourished under the leadership of Tiracchia. The orchestra produced three LP recordings featuring a diverse musical selection, ranging from the virtuosic compositions of Munier and Calace to traditional Italian favorites, many of which were arranged for the orchestra by Tiracchia. As one of the foremost regional ambassadors of the Italian-American cultural tradition, the Munier Orchestra maintained a high profile. In 1976, Munier played a role in the nation's Bicentennial Celebration, performing in concert with the Philadelphia Orchestra to celebrate the city's musical heritage. When Dr. Tiracchia passed away in 1990, Chris Ianni - a mandolin and mandola virtuoso and charter member of Munier - assumed the baton. Ianni led the group until his death in 2007. Robert Henry served as Munier's conductor from 2007 until 2011. Mark Linkins currently serves as Munier's musical director. The Kovriga Balalaika Orchestra was formed in the early 1930s by the late Paul Kauriga a master composer, teacher and conductor. Mr. Kauriga was a talented violinist devoted to preserving the music of his forefathers, and specialized in Eastern European music. The orchestra honored Mr. Kauriga in 1976 by changing the name of the group to the Russian version of his name, thus becoming the Kovriga Balalaika Orchestra. The orchestra grew to over 80 members. Mr Kauriga was later nominated for a Grammy Award for his balalaika compositions in 1982. His music has been used in movies, and even internationally broadcast Olympic figure skating competition Presently the the orchestra's recordings archived in the Smithsonian Folkways Music Collection at the Smithsonian Institute to be preserved forever. Mr. Kauriga was inducted into the BDAA (Balalaika and Domra Association of America) Hall of Fame in 1994. At Mr. Kauriga's passing in 2007, but his three sons, Gregory, Dimitri and Paul have continued working with orchestra members, friends and family to keep their father's legacy alive through the KBO. The orchestra now has four generations of the original founding families among the membership. Recognized as a world class accordionist, educator, and arranger-composer, Joseph Soprani has dominated the accordion scene nationally for more than 45 years. He holds the distinction of being the only accordionist in the history of the Philadelphia Orchestra to appear as featured soloist under Eugene Ormandy During his career He has made numerous appearances throughout the country including personal appearances for President, President Nixon, and many world dignitaries including command performances for King Mohammed V of Morocco, King and Queen of Cambodia, President Symgman Rhea of Korea, President Chiang Kai-shek of China and the Royal Family of Japan. Update on the Documentary, "Accordions Rising"by Roberta Cantow |
Tag Line: With a beautiful vengeance! Log Line: Accordions have returned, not only with amusement, but with a beautiful, eloquent, haunting, and downright exciting vengeance! The film will be completed very soon with all of the finishing touches that a professional sound mix and color correction can provide. Once completed, I will be submitting it to film festivals, some of which require premiere status.Only once the film has been accepted for its first exhibition will I be able to sell the DVDs and VODs from the film's website. In the meantime, I am suggesting that as many people as possible visit the website and join the mailing list. The more that I can demonstrate to prospective distributors that interest in the film does exist, the more likely it will be that I can secure formal distribution. (Doing this implies no obligation on your part, but may help the film out in the world). You can also provide meaningful support by "liking" the film on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/TheAWordDocumentary You may also request an invoice for a Pre-Release DVD Copy by writing to me at: rcantow@originaldigital.net. Purchases made in this way will continue to serve the fund-raising needs of the project.Additional options for contributions and perks are still active on the website: www.accordionsrising.com Short Synopsis: Accordions Rising Is a documentary feature film (1:20) about the resurgence of interest in accordion music over the last 30-40 years. Although many continue to see the accordion as the stodgy instrument of a bygone era - and accordion jokes abound – this film sets the record straight. The film is the story of the variety, diversity and extraordinary virtuosity of the instrument and the music that it can make. Touching on its history but focusing on the present, the film offers entertaining and conversational style interviews, anecdotal commentary and both formal and informal music performance examples from celebrated accordionists, composers and bands working and performing in America today. The film provides quite a tapestry of fascinating individuals, their attitudes, deep passions, and above of all else, profound dedication to the instrument. We learn that though still a rebellious lot, these music makers have an audience, in fact, in some of the hippest hide-a-ways and most sought after mainstream venues. The film makes clear that the so-called “accordion world” is actually a curious continuum that includes everything from whacky and kitsch to sophisticated, serious, meditative and post modern. |

Composer Seeking Bayanist/Accordionist for "Bayan and Beyond"by Rita Barnea |
Composer Dan Lawitts is searching for an accordionist/bayanist in the Syracuse/Auburn/Ithaca area who is capable of performing his "Bayan and Beyond" for free bass which Stas Venglevski recorded a few years ago. The performance date is flexible. You can hear a small sample on: https://www.cdbaby.com/cd/venglevski4 Dan is timpanist for the Auburn, NY, Chamber Orchestra. Native to Syracuse, New York, and returning to the area only recently, Mr. Lawitts started playing drums in his early teens. He graduated from SUNY Fredonia with a Music Education degree, and did graduate work at the University of Michigan, with a summer at the Berklee College of Music and summers at VanderCook College of Music thrown into the mix. After five years as a music teacher, Dan left public school teaching (continuing occasional private instruction), returning in the last ten years or so, though he continued performing music in various venues throughout that time. Employment opportunities led Dan to the Midwest, where his music experiences included performances in community musical productions, community and semi-professional orchestras and concert bands, a Chicago-based society wedding band, as well as various rock/popular music and jazz groups. Dan has performed solos with the Concord Chamber Orchestra and the Geneseo University Concert Band, and performed in a duet for the International Saxophone Congress. Mr. Lawitts became composer-in-residence for the Concord Chamber Orchestra of Milwaukee (for which "Bayan And Beyond" was written) while living in the Milwaukee area, wrote small ensemble works for Milwaukee Symphony’s ACE program (one of which was music for Jerdine Nolan’s Harvey Potter’s Balloon Farm—also performed at the 2013 Cazenovia Counterpoint Festival) and arranged works performed by the Milwaukee Symphony and the Milwaukee Ballet. Additionally, since returning to Syracuse, Dan has had one of his compositions performed by both the Onondaga Civic Symphony and the Cazenovia Community Concert Band’s Brass Ensemble, as well as a new arrangement for that band. Why was "Bayan and Beyond" composed? The composer said, "How B&B came about was, Janet, the conductor at the time, asked me to consider writing a piece for an upcoming concert featuring Stas. A few days later she set up a meeting for Stas, Janet and myself. I played a midi version of the first half of the first movement for them. They were surprised to hear so much so soon. They liked what they heard, so I soon finished it up and rehearsals began on it right away." You can reach the composer Dan Lawitts at: 1danlaw1@gmail.com, |

A Mahler Symphony Squeezed In A Squeezebox, New Yorkby Rob Howard |
A review by Tom Huizenga for ‘Deceptive Cadence’: “When Gustav Mahler said a symphony "must be like the world. It must embrace everything," I suppose he meant embracing accordions, too. Gustav Mahler's sprawling Ninth Symphony is a 90-minute journey brimming with the joys of life, haunted by death and with a lot happening along the way. Accordionist William Schimmel has squeezed this immense musical canvas down to just 6 1/2 minutes. That takes some guts. But as it turns out, Schimmel's performance isn't a stunt. The amount of thought and feeling poured into these fleeting minutes reflects Mahler's bipolar musical personality — jubilant one moment, sorrowful the next. With fluttering keys and low end exhalations, Schimmel's instrument — a giant Titano Emperor — sighs like a weary beast burdened with the weight of the world. Yet from it flows Mahler's heart-melting opening theme. Trumpeter Wynton Marsalis steps in, adding his own dose of nostalgia by riffing on patterns Schimmel created from that gorgeous motif. Perhaps with tongue in cheek, Schimmel suddenly twists Mahler into a tango and then zeroes in on the bumptious dance from the symphony's second movement. Marsalis returns to cap the piece with another wistful solo. What would the composer think? Although Mahler never called for an accordion in his symphonies, he did deploy cowbells and mandolins in the service of embracing it all”. Dr William Schimmel’s new CD, ‘Theatre of the Accordion’, released in July by Roven Records, features solo works written and performed by William Schimmel, and featuring guest artist Wynton Marsalis. Michigan Accordion Society hosts Special Performance in Northern Michigan Wine Countryby Jory Little |
TRAVERSE CITY, Mich., Aug 31, 2015 — "Drink more wine!" yelled Tenor Aaron Caruso. "The more you drink, the better we sound!" Members of the Michigan Accordion Society partnered with the Bellini Opera Society to give a special performance at Bonobo Winery in Traverse City, Michigan Sunday that marked the end of the 4th Annual Wine and Opera Festival. The performance gave attendees an up close look at the opera by turning Bonobo Winery's 3,500 square foot patio into a stage for the afternoon. Hundreds of people were in attendance including owner and HGTV star Carter Oosterhouse and wife & Hollywood actress Amy Smart, as well as Brother Todd Oosterhouse and Wife Caroline. "They give off so much energy and their raw talent is incredible," said Carter. "I am glad we were able to have them perform for us and I can't wait to hear them again next year." The singers included Tenor/Aaron Caruso, Soprano/Eva Evola, Mezzo-Soprano/Lisa Agazzi and Baritone/Dino Valle. The singers were accompanied by accordion players David Passalacqua and President of the Michigan Accordion Society, Joe Recchia, who are all members of the Michigan Accordion Society. "The winery itself is a beautiful Hollywood setting," said Dino Valle. "So we wanted to make a Hollywood entrance." Dino and Aaron accompanied by accordion playe r, Joe Recchia, drove into the vineyard in a four wheel drive Jeep while singing to announce their arrival. The group then gathered on the patio and sang classic opera songs such as "Habanera" from Bizet's "Carmen" and Aaron Caruso ended the afternoon by covering Frank Sinatra's "My Way". This marks the fourth year that the Bellini Opera Society led by President Rosolino Lo Duca and Co founder Dino Valle have been coming to Traverse City to perform opera in collaboration with Silvio "Tony" Ciccone (who's Hollywood Celebrity daughter is Madonna) as well as Mario Tabone. This year was a tribute to the great Italian composer Giacomo Puccini Looking to the future, the group plans to keep coming back to Traverse City to spread their love of opera. Vineyard Owner, Mario Tabone, says he wants to expand the program into a weeklong event that is composed of different venues including the Traverse City Opera House. "A problem that we face is that when young people hear the word "opera" they are immediately turned off and that's a major hurdle," said Mario. He hopes that in the future, they can incorporate youth choir groups to learn more about the opera and join in during the festivities. Upon hearing Mary play, Cody immediately fell in love with the sound of the accordion. He received a small student accordion for his sixth birthday and started lessons. Not being satisfied with just two instruments, at age seven Cody asked to begin organ lessons. At one of his lessons, Mrs. Koenig demonstrated her button box accordion for Cody, he began button box lessons just after his eighth birthday. In addition to Cody's two hour weekly lesson with Mary, he also takes pipe organ lessons at St. Mary's Church in Lancaster with church organist, Mike Bitts, voice lessons with Michael Popovsky, and violin and saxophone lessons at school. Cody enjoys performing regularly at Lancaster area retirement communities and local events. He has also performed onstage with the Alex Meixner Band and the Walt Groller Orchestra.
